This was a technical exercise to intentionally produce a texture for the wheat. Note: this is a surface texture.

Along the way, another Bryce artist, Richard Vanderlippe showed me a better way to produce the wheat effect, where he's even provided his version of the VOLUMETRIC wheat material. For your entertainment, I've combined both textures into the original setup, shown below.:
