Champion boy born; Perez dies

ATARI STATION (March 5, 2008) – Today marks the birth of Christopher Champion, the son of Atari Force commander Martin Champion and AF pilot Lydia Perez. What would normally be a joyous event is tinged by sadness, however, as Perez died during childbirth. Flags across New Earth are now flying at half-staff in wake of the news. A state funeral is planned for Friday.

Everyone on New Earth, naturally, knows of Atari Force's mission to find a new home for humanity as Old Earth was brought to the brink of catastrophe. They were successful with only a year of searching, despite a temporary delay to fight the Malaglon.

After the discovery of New Earth and the beginning of the relocation of the Old Earth's population, most of Atari Force retired from public view. Champion and Perez were married on August 13, 2006. Christopher is their only child.

Unconfirmed reports say that Martin has disowned his son, blaming him for Perez's death. Since neither Champion nor Perez have any living relatives, their former teammates Mohandas Singh and Li-San O'Rourke have offered to take Christopher and raise him alongside their 14-month-old daughter, Erin.

An ATARI spokesperson says Christopher Champion has thus far exhibited no signs of side effects from his parents' frequent, unshielded travels through the multiverse. Erin O'Rourke-Singh, despite the Asian ancestry of both her parents, was born with white hair. Beyond that, tests on Erin have not revealed any serious genetic abnormalities. The average New Earth citizen need not worry about genetic defects in their offspring as shielding was improved before relocation and most only made the single trip through the multiverse to New Earth.
