1996 Huntsville Winter Open Results The 1996 Huntsville Winter Open was held February 9 in Huntsville, AL. Due to a postponement from January participation was low even with an entry fee reduced to $10 (no prize money, except the free doubles event paid $10 to the winning team). The tournament went smoothly and all seemed to enjoy themselves. Format was a giant round robin and single elimination doubles. Jay Sourinthone (Nashville, TN) defeated Don Gaither (Hazel Green, AL) in a close 3 game Championship final. The championship division was dominated by the 4 Sourinthone brothers (Jay, Saymek, Lock and Noi). I personally had to play all four and managed to keep the younger two, Lock (14?) and Noi (11?) out of the semi-finals. Terry "Ike" Hamilton (Birmingham, AL) kept Saymek out of the semi-finals in the other afternoon round robin. In Class A, Ed Watts (Huntsville, AL) defeated Justin Davis (Decatur, AL). Thip Vong (Nashville) defeated Jason Denton (Decatur, AL) in the Class B finale; and Gary Wood (Birmingham) defeated Bob Countess (Huntsville, AL) to take the Class C title. Jay Sourinthone and Shaun Stallings (Nashville) took the doubles prize by edging past Lock and Saymek Sourinthone. -- Chip Patton **********************************
