SOME DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM OLIVER,

First Settler of Elizabethtown, NJ

A LIMITED account of the descendents of William Oliver (c1625-1694) through David (7) Oliver (1764 — 1838, Rahway NJ — Prosperity, Washington County, PA). The provider of this information, Philip Mark Oliver is descended from David (7) via John Milton Oliver (8), Samuel Addison Oliver (9) Cyrus Goldsmith Oliver (10) and John Edward Oliver (11). Samuel Addison Oliver moved to Iowa around 1858 and was a prominent politician, state legislator, mayor, judge, and congressman from Iowa.

First a simple chart to clarify the relationships. The provider has available extensive information on some other aspects of these lines; brothers, daughters and wives are included to assist in making connections, please advise if you need further information.

1 [3] William Oliver1p86;2

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Birth:                      say 1625 -1636

Death:                     1694, Rahway, NJ3;1, pp86-87

Occ:                        "Warner to warne ye toune" in Stamford

Father:                     [2] poss. Thomas Oliver (1610->1686)

The ancestry of William Oliver remains unclear.  Recent discoveries of the origins of Thomas Oliver the Ruling Elder of the church at Boston (via the Wm & Francis in 1621) show that he almost certainly cannot be the father, and further that there do not appear to be any sons of Thomas that are likely candidates. Further yDNA testing of a descendant of the Thomas Oliver line shows a poor match with yDNA from multiple descendants of the William Oliver Line.

William definitely lived in Connecticut (New Haven) prior to becoming a settler of Elizabethtown NJ in 1665 and may have lived in Long Island or Cape Cod before that. He may be the son of Thomas of Fairfield who we can now establish was likely not a son of Thomas. 4,5,6

-----

William Oliver testified before the court of magistrates at New Haven held May 1658, in the trial of Thomas Marshall and Richard Crabb on his own  [Crabb's] account and that of his wife who refused to attend.2, p712

----

ÒOLIVER FAMILY.  This relates to WILLIAM OLIVER, one of the First Settlers of Elizabethtown, an associate of 1665, (vide, ante, PART ONE, p. 101, and HATFIELD, p. 86), soon after 1665, had sons, David and Samuel, with a daughter, Mary, who became the wife of Captain GEORGE DRAKE, of Piscataway, and others of the family became FIRST SETTLERS there. (Vide, ante, p. 601.) 8, V:623

ÒThe pedigree is troublesome, but see, N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg., Vol. 19, pp. 100 et seq., there being much internal evidence that this is the lineage--which has been repeated in HUTCHINSON, (pp. 25 et seq.), "Descendants of (Mr.) Thomas Oliver," ruling Elder of church at Boston, was certainly the immigrant ancestor.

ÒIt was alleged by Hatfield, in his "History of Elizabeth," that he [William Oliver] was either the son of JOHN OLIVER, who died in 1646, or THOMAS OLIVER, who died in 1652, at Boston. However, I am able to give an origin of WILLIAM OLIVER, heretofore unknown, although not ready to dispute the alternative of Hatfield's statements. He also says that he married the widow, MARY SIMPKINS, in Elizabethtown, which is not true [the marriage took place earlier]...I am working upon the supposition that WILLIAM OLIVER was the son of THOMAS OLIVER, first at Fairfield, Conn., before 1661, and that the latter, in turn, was the son of the first THOMAS OLIVER of Boston, but have not satisfied myself as to the proof of this. 8, V:763...

---

ÒWILLIAM OLIVER came to Elizabethtown from Connecticut; WILLIAM AND MARY OLIVER were both witnesses to the will of HENRY ACKERLY of Stamford, Conn., dated June 17, 1658, so they were married before that date and undoubtedly at Stamford. The records there show WILLIAM OLIVER to have resided there and to have been chosen "Warner to warne ye toune" as late as December, 1664. They also show births of a son to WILLIAM OLIVER in 1659, registration of a child born in 1657, and another son, born 1662. (Vide, ante, PART FOUR, p. 623.)

ÒAnother entry shows the latter to have been the son, SAMUEL OLIVER, afterward of Elizabethtown, which forever settles the question that he was the son of WILLIAM OLIVER SR. and not his brother, as is commonly supposedÉ  I am working upon the supposition that WILLIAM OLIVER was the son of THOMAS OLIVER, first at Fairfield, Conn., before 1661, and that the latter, in turn, was the son of the first THOMAS OLIVER of Boston, but have not satisfied myself as to the proof of this.

ACKERLY FAMILY

...A very important article on the Ackerly family with some decidedly new and interesting ancestral facts concerning the OLIVER family.

***

The New Jersey records show the following entry: "1679, September 10th. Letters of Administration on the estate of John Sympkins of Elizabethtown, deceased, granted to his mother, MARY, now the wife of WILLIAM OLIVER, on behalf of her other son, ct HENRY, to WILLIAM OLIVER. WILLIAM OLIVER was one of the patentees of Elizabethtown, N. J., and took the oath of allegiance there in 1665.

The Piscataway families, who received the ACKERLY blood, were those coming from the marriage of ELIZABETH OLIVER and ZERAH HIGGINS, 1680; MARY OLIVER and GEORGE DRAKE, 1677; MARY OLIVER and JOHN MOORE, 1717; REV. BENJAMIN STELLE and MERCY DRAKE, (?) daughter of GEORGE DRAKE, and possibly others to be later discovered.V8, V:762-63

1.1.1a.1a.1 [7] David Oliver9,22

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Birth:                      1764, Rahway, NJ23, p372; 21,9

Death:                     13 Oct 1838, Prosperity, PA9

Occ:                        Shoemaker, Farmer

David Oliver was a resident of New Jersey at a very early date and from there migrated to Washington County, Pennsylvania where he followed his calling of shoemaking for a time, later engaging in agricultural pursuits.24, p401

ÒDuring the War of the Revolution, he seems to have been a TORY living near Rawick (Rahway) NJ near Elizabethtown.  The Olivers in that vicinity were all farmers and all TORIES in bad repute with the Colonials.  He was forced to leave home in the night to avoid arrest and it is thought that perhaps he went to Western PA at that time.Ó Hatfield History of Elizabeth, New Jersey

Abijiah, wife and 2 sons, John and James, are buried in an abandoned Washington PA graveyard behind the Catholic Church.  Gravestones have been piled in a heap.  Buried in the same plot was George Reed Oliver son of William Loveridge  William went west in1830's died and was buried at Quincy, IL August 23, 1833.  Graveyard is now a city park.  Headstones were buried 2 feet underground and exact site cannot be located.

David born in 1764 [sic but incorrect, ca 1761] was 12 [15] years of age in 1776 and too young to join the New Jersey Loyalist Army.  the confiscation of the family property in1779 apparently decided him to associate with a marauding band that harassed the Continental supply lines.

David's semi-military career ended in 1782 with his capture in Rahway, NJ.  Soon after peace in 1784.  The Crown set up a Court of Claims in Annapolis, Nova Scotia to reimburse Loyalists who had lost their property because of Political affiliation.  Ichabod and David were in Nova Scotia with their claim for 1090 pounds. 250 pounds damage was awarded in 1788.  Ichabod returned to Hunterdon County NJ where he settled.  David had too tough a reputation to return to his former residence so he hit out for pioneer country across the Alleghenies to Washington County PA.  He bought land at the head of Ten Miles Creek in Morris Township and set up a home with bride Sarah Loveridge from his home area in NJ.

Quoting Aunt Maude Oliver, "At the head of Ten Mile Creek, David Oliver and Sarah Loveridge, a woman of fine intellect and culture, reared their family"  Abijah, Elize who married a Leacock, who died leaving a young son who was raised by her family and who married and moved to Ohio. Jane, Barsheba, William Loveridge whose daughter married a Hart and John Milton who was our grandfather."

David was enrolled in Washington Co. militia serving in 1793 with Captain Abijah Loveridge his brother in law.  Died Oct.13, 1838 aged 74 years. Sara Loveridge died in 1857 aged 88 years.  She fell into the fireplace while alone and burned causing her death.  Jane and Barsheba were spinsters who kept hordes of cats.  David Milton, youngest son died June10, 1828 and all are buried in the Oliver lot at Prosperity PA Presbyterian Churchyard.

Abijah is buried with wife Magery and 2 sons in abandoned graveyard in Washington PA.  William Loveridge family is buried in Washington PA graveyard.  Abijah Loveridge and wife are buried near Oliver lots at Prosperity PA.  John Milton Oliver and first wife Mary Springer Hewes and two infant children Lydia Ann (Apr 9 1817-Mar 9 1823) John Gibbon Oliver (Dec 19 1831-Dec 19 1832) are in family lot at Prosperity PA9
