This brings me to my favourite scene in Gift of the Wheelman which is - you may have already found out - the one Ray, Benton and Fraser Sr. pursue Del and his father while Sarah McLachlan sings us into an ocean of real independend/alternative rock with one of her best songs, morning sky in winter, mood of christmas time, when wishes borne in mind the whole year use to appear, a mixture of feelings in a chase never felt before, a bittersweet symphony, not a single spoken word: just Steaming.
In the end everything's clear again, the criminal is caught, justice has won - but all the feelings they remain like a still life, an underestimated episode is over, a simple one which has come up to my expectations in a perfect way.
Great music, too! Particularly like "Henry Martin."
They also manage to squeeze an easter theme through - sacrifice. Every piece of this episode works. Nothing misses, even the scenes inside the police station - "I said elves, you moron!" The first appearance of Fraser's dad's ghost was so surprising. It left you gasping, then made you chuckle. My favourite lines of the series come from this episode; "Has there been any history of insanity in our family?" "Well there was your uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves, but we all just assumed it was a freak accident." Then the writers top it by introducing the ghost of Ray's dad in a cavalier manner. Never before had a laughed, cried and thought so much with a TV series. Poignant and intelligent. This episode is something special. Treasure it, it's a rare thing.
