File 3 of 3
An Invitation to Romance - Letting Go
Moffat: "I've worked very hard to create an image of Canadians we can
all be proud of."
Fraser: "Yes sir."
Moffat: "You, on the other hand, have been doing everything in your
power to wreak havoc on that image."
Fraser: "Sir?"
Moffat: "All this do-gooding, Constable. Picking up litter, rescuing
kittens, saving people's lives. What sort of message do you suppose
that sends to the Americans?"
Fraser: "That we care, sir?"
Moffat: "Exactly, and people don't fear people who care."
Fraser: "I'm sorry, sir. I wasn't aware that we wanted the Americans to
fear us."
Moffat: "That's what every country wants, Fraser."
Moffat: "...That's what Canada needs."
Fraser: "To be feared by tailors?"
(After Moffat yells at tailor)
"There is nothing more frustrating than playing hide and seek with a
deaf wolf."
(Benton Fraser)
"Alright, no more Mr Nice Man..."
(Fraser)
Ray: "Mounties do not lie. If he says it's his letter, it's his letter."
Postal Clerk: "I don't care if he's Sgt. Preston. He's not getting the
letter."
Fraser: "This isn't just mail, Ray. This is a highly sensitive Canadian
document."
Ray: "Oh, you guys planning an invasion?"
Fraser: "Well, I'm not entirely sure. I think I may have said too much
already."
(Regarding delivery of party invitation)
Nick: "Who was that?" [Fraser had just left]
Katherine: "Oh, no one, dear. A Mountie. He means nothing to me."
Nigel: "And what's that supposed to mean? He means nothing?"
He's a total stranger. If I hadn't been lying on top of him, I hardly
would have recognized him."
(Katherine to jealous fiance, Nigel)
"Katherine: "I'm sure it's just an innocent infatuation, dear. Isn't
that true?"
Fraser: "No." (as in it's not an infatuation or anything like that)
Nigel: "What?"
Katherine: "Really?"
Nigel: "How long has this been going on?"
Katherine: "Just since this morning."
Katherine: "He can't hear you. He's mute."
Fraser: "I believe you mean deaf."
Katherine: "Oh yes. Thank you, sweetheart."
Marriage Clerk: "You're marrying a deaf-mute Mountie and you didn't
recognize him?"
Fraser: "Perhaps I can explain."
Marriage Clerk: "If he's deaf-mute, why is he talking?"
Katherine: "Now you're criticizing the handicapped?"
Katherine: "Get under my dress!"
Fraser: "You want me to get underneath your wedding dress?"
Katherine: "Yes!"
Fraser: "Isn't that bad luck?"
"Oh, he's usually a very sweet man. It's just that when he gets jealous,
there's no reasoning with him. Well, you know what the Swiss are like."
(Katherine to Fraser regarding Nigel)
Moffat: "How long does it take to do a simple task?"
Jasmine: "He said he'd be back soon, sir."
Moffat: "Well, if he's not here in five minutes, he doesn't have to
bother showing up at all. No more excuses. I will not be made to look
like a fool."
Ray: (to Dief in Fraser's office): "Trouble."
"Mental note. Send Fraser north for a little R&R. I think he's been
spending too much time with that Chicago policeman."
(Moffat, to himself, after observing Ray doing doorman duty)
Ray: "Let me think this through. If Fraser were with a beautiful woman,
where would he end up?"
Dief: (woof)
Ray: "No, no, no. That's you and me. Come on, think. Okay, what is the
most unglamorous, unromantic place you could possibly take a woman?"
Dief: (woof, takes off after garbage truck that goes past Consulate)
Ray: "Oh, come on? A garbage truck?? Not even Fraser is that, ...Hold
on, Benny!"
Katherine: "What is wrong with you? A man is trying to kill you. You're
supposed to hate him. A woman throws herself at you. You're supposed
to... you're supposed to do something."
Fraser: "Miss Burns. You are engaged to be married."
"You got a lot of nerve. For a Canadian."
(Nigel to Fraser)
"Congratulations. I hear you're getting married."
(Ray to Fraser)
Ray: "You don't want to know why I'm wearing your uniform."
Fraser: "I just assumed it was something personal."
Fraser: "Mr. Ellis, I want to assure you that Katherine has been
completely faithful to you."
Katherine: "Except for the part on the waterbed."
Ray: "Waterbed?"
Fraser: "That was entirely innocent."
Ray: "Yeah, big shock there."
There's nothing you can do to prove a virtue."
(Fraser to Nigel)
Ray: "I can't believe you threw your hat."
Fraser: "Well, it's got an incredibly stiff brim. It's actually
specifically designed to..."
Ray: "We're in the middle of a crisis and you throw you hat."
Fraser: "I'm sorry, Ray."
"Do you know what I love about Canadians? They're really easy to elbow
out of the way."
(Ray to Fraser, at Consulate, regarding buffet)
"I thought I was in love once. And then later I thought maybe it was
just an inner ear imbalance... We spent an evening snowed in on the
side of a mountain watching the northern lights. It was probably the
most dramatic moment of my life. But in the end I realized I'd learned
two things. The first is... that it's easier to think you're in love than
it is to accept that you're alone, and the second is that it's very easy
to confuse love with subatomic particles bursting in the air. Well, I
also learned that I should have my ears checked more regularly." Fraser: "There's a certain matter that I've withheld from you for some
time now, and I feel if I don't clear my conscience soon." Ray, I had no choice. The door just opened...she was standing there, and
then when she took off her coat there was very much more of her standing
there." "Okay, I'm standing at his door. I drop my coat. I look at him and he
looks at me. You know how a squirrel looks just before you hit him?" "Okay, the way I see it, you have two options: you can tell me exactly
what happened with my kid sister that night in your apartment or one
of us isn't leaving this closet alive." "Francesca: [to Gloria] "...that look in his eyes. You know that long
slow drift from here [neck] to there [below waist]. Well, you know.
It's so romantic." "Out of curiosity, where was the wolf during all this time?" "Okay, so we're looking for a transient with clean fingernails who smells
like chili." Fraser: "There are more things in heaven and earth than have been dreamt
of in your philosophy, Horatio. You see, Horatio was..." They couldn't find an eggroll in Chinatown." Ray: "So, Francesca." Ray:Stay away from him, okay?
Francesca: "Excuse me?" "Eighty bucks." "He was a lousy father. But boy, could he play pool. It was the one thing
in life he did well." "Is Fraser here?" "What's wrong with your hat?" "I arrested your mother once." Fraser Sr.: "Women. Have you ever been able to figure then out, son?" "I'm sorry." "She drove the getaway car. She and two men robbed a bank in Alaska.
One of them died, one of them fled south and she came across the
border in a light airplane. It was forced down because of weather.
The pilot abandoned her. I tracked her into a place called
Fortitude Pass. A storm had been blowing for days and by the time
I'd found her I'd lost everything. My pack. My supplies...
She was huddled in a crag in the lee side of a mountain. Almost
frozen. Very near death. So I staked a lean-to with my rifle and
draped my coat around it. And I held onto her while the storm
closed in around us. And I kept talking to her to keep her from
slipping away. And it snowed for a day and a night and a day; and
when I couldn't talk anymore I took her fingers and I put them in
my mouth to keep them warm... I don't remember losing consciousness
but I do remember being aware that I was dying... And then I heard
her voice. She was reciting a poem. Over and over. And I couldn't
make out the words but I couldn't stop listening. She had the most
beautiful voice. It was as though I had known her forever. Across
a thousand lifetimes... Uh, the storm finally broke and we were alive
and after a day we found my pack. We ate everything, everything I had
in one meal. And it took us four days to reach the nearest outpost.
And we camped that night just outside the town within sight of the
church's steeple. And I held her in my arms and she asked me to let
her go. You see, no one knew that I had found her. The police didn't
even know her name. I could just let her go. And she could walk away
that night..." Welsh: "Where's the big red one?" "Three's a crowd, huh Dief?" "Do you really have to go to work?" "It's just that I made a mistake once, and I can't make it again. You
know I think there are certain things you live to regret in your life.
Losing your friendship would be one of them, and losing her..." Ray: "Any friend of Fraser's is a friend of mine." Fraser: "Don't we need a warrant to go in there?" Louis: "Sir, I know that Vecchio's a real weasel and all, but he's a
straight-up cop." Fraser Sr.: "She's (Victoria) not coming, son." Ray:"Don't you have things to do in Hell or wherever you are?" Well, let me tell you something--you can go to Hell. And if you need
directions, you can get them from the guy who's following me." "You should take the deal." Fraser Sr.: "What are you doing?" Fraser: "What do you want, Victoria?" "Listen, just because you can see them and their blinds are open, it's
not to be taken as an invitation. It's unethical. It's also against
the law. Aside from which you'll go blind." Fraser: "You know you can leave, Ray. I mean you don't have to come here
every day." "In the meantime, we get through this the only way I know how, baseball." Ray: (looking down at Dief) "Don't they have rules about this sort of
thing?" Fraser: "If you had come sooner, I might have been able to tell which
one of us was actually..." Fraser Sr.: "Oh my God." "You'd better give him some, or he'll just embarrass himself." "You're in his chair." "It was an otter. I was ten, it was dead, someone hit me with it. Can we
move on?" "Another hunter?" "I do hate to see a good man go to waste." "She's a lovely girl." Fraser: "She's a doctor. He's an intern. They're lovers." Ray: "Hey, where do you buy lumber up there?" (in the Yukon)
Fraser: "You cut it."
You got an axe for me?" "I think appearances can be deceiving." Ray: "Hey, Benny. Victoria was not your fault. It could've happened to
anybody. You were blindsided." Fraser: "You hurt her. I understand that." [to Kevin]
Carter: "You don't understand anything." Fraser: "Does it hurt?" [referring to Ray's bandaged shoulder]
(Fraser discussing love with Katherine)
HEAVEN AND EARTH
Ray: "Okay, okay, clear."
Fraser: "It appears that there's a situation which I have unwittingly
encouraged and it's taken a turn that I perhaps foolishly had not
anticipated or was even aware of as a remote possibility but insofar
as it is a matter of the heart and directly affects someone who is
close to both of us."
Ray: "Fraser, you've got from here to my desk. Make it count."
Fraser: "Saturday last your sister came to my apartment in the middle
of the night dressed in what can only be described as less than
requisite attire and offered herself to me."
Ray: "Okay, great. Now beat it.
(Fraser goes down hall and Ray stops in his tracks)
Ray: ".... My sister?"
Fraser: "Yes."
Ray: "You slept with my sister?"
Fraser: "Did she say that?"
Ray: "No, she did not say that. She is my sister. I do not discuss sex
with my sister."
Fraser: "So, she didn't say...?"
Ray: "No."
Fraser: "Oh well. Very well. Forget that I mentioned it." (runs)
Ray: "Hey, Fraser!"
(Benton Fraser)
(Francesca to Elaine, re Fraser)
(Ray to Fraser, in closet)
Ray (overhears it): "I'm telling you. Nothing better have happened."
(To Fraser, re the Mountie and his sister)
(Lt. Welsh to Francesca, re her and Fraser's 'encounter')
(Ray Vecchio)
Ray: "Hamlet's best friend. I know. I saw the movie."
Fraser: "Well, Hamlet sees his father's ghost."
Ray: "Yeah. He also kills his uncle and spends entirely way too much
time talking to skeletons."
Fraser: "Well, I suppose that would follow."
(Ray to Fraser re Feds)
Fraser: "Your sister."
Ray: "You're not going to tell me, are you?"
Fraser: "No, Ray."
Ray: "I'm going to have to live with this, aren't I?"
Fraser: "Yes."
Ray: "Stupid, right? I mean, if I want anybody to sleep with my
sister, and I'm not encouraging this, I'd want it to be you."
Fraser: "That's very generous of you."
Ray: "Look, Frannie. You heard what I said. Just stay away from him, okay?"
Francesca: "Ray."
Ray: "Frannie. You are in over your head."
Francesca: "Meaning?"
Ray: "Meaning guys like him don't marry girls like you. That's fairy tale.
And girls like you get hurt and guys like him don't even know it and
that's life."
Francesca: "Oh yeah? You know this?"
Ray: "Why do you do this? You always do this to yourself?"
Francesca: "Yeah, I do. You know what your problem is, Ray?"
Ray: "No, Frannie, why don't you tell me?"
Francesca: "Yeah, I'll tell you. Your problem is that you are so afraid
to dream. You are so afraid to reach out for something that you really
want. You know what happens to people like you? They get old. They get
alone. and they die. And they never know. Well, that's not me."
[she starts to leave]
Ray: "Hey, hey, hey. Come here... Come here. Did you sleep with him?"
Francesca: "Oh god. Why? Why? Would it matter to you if I did?"
Ray: "Yes, it would. You're my sister... I care about you." [they hug]
VICTORIA'S SECRET
"To fix that thing? I can buy a new for that."
"Not like this one. This one's got character. Not a common
commodity among vacuums."
"Oh dear! I appear to be...ahhhh...little...ummm..."
"How much?"
"Sixty dollars. Thank you kindly."
"No I thank you."
(repairman, Ray and Fraser)
(Ray to Fraser re his father)
"No he's not here. How many times do I have to tell you."
"Because if he is I'll kill you. Is she in the driver's seat?"
"She's coming, ma!"
"Oh no! Ma, you're not driving. We're not going 35 all the way to Florida."
(Franny and Ray)
"Oh, huh! This is the one they buried me in. They had to snip off the back
so I could like flat. I'm sure they meant well, but they have no idea how
embarrassing these things can be in the after life."
(Benton and Robert Fraser)
"You did not!"
"Honest to God. I gave her a speeding ticket."
"You knew it was her car and you pulled her over anyway?"
"No, I was right there in the passenger seat."
"Get out!"
"She was doing 45 in a 30."
(Robert Fraser, Benton Fraser)
Fraser: "Actually, I'm asking you for your advice, Dad."
Fraser Sr.: "In my 57 years of being alive and my 14 months of being
dead, I only learned one thing about women and that's that I haven't
learned one damned thing about women."
"No, it's all right, I probably deserve it."
"You do."
(Fraser and Victoria)
(Fraser in "confession" )
Ray: "I think he's got himself a mystery woman."
Huey: "You mean you haven't met her?"
Ray: "Yeah, I met her."
Welsh: "So what's she like?"
Ray: "She's... uh... She's Canadian."
Welsh, Huey, and Guardino: "Oh."
(Ray)
"Yeah."
"So I guess you need this."
"Kind of."
[She begins to unbutton the jacket.]
"Although, I do have something like 82 sick days coming to me."
"Mmmm, I think you should go straight to bed."
(Victoria and Fraser)
(Fraser to Ray after argument at apartment; interrupted by gunshot)
Victoria: "So, you're Ray."
Ray: "Yeah, and you're Victoria. So how did you two meet?"
Victoria: "He arrested me."
Ray: "Ah, he meets a lot of people that way. Listen, you hurt him and
I'll kill you."
Ray: "Not if there's imminent danger?"
Fraser: "And what kind of imminent danger might that be, Ray?"
Ray: "Oh, something like fire."
(Ray lights matchbook and throws it in apartment)
IAD Guy: "You don't seriously believe that, do you?"
Louis: "Oh yeah, serious weasel."
Fraser: "You don't know her."
Fraser Sr.: "Neither do you."
Fraser: "I'm in love with her."
Fraser Sr.: "Doesn't mean you know her."
Fraser: "Did you know Mum? I mean did you know who she really was?
Or did you know what you wanted her to be?"
Fraser Sr.: "I knew who she was in her soul. That's what I loved."
Fraser: "Come on, Dad. You weren't around long enough to call her by
name. ... You know I've got almost no memory of the two of you together.
Fraser Sr.: "Well, you were only six when died, for God's sake, and
don't tell me I didn't love your mother, I still do. I wrote her every
damned day of my life!"
Fraser: "I know. I've read your journals. You write beautifully."
Fraser Sr.: "No professional training but..."
Fraser: "You want to know something? You never saw her. You never saw
who.. who she was. You never saw her when she was angry. You never saw
her when she was frightened. You never saw her when she was brave or
when she was petty. You never saw her."
Fraser Sr.: "She was a good woman. She deserved better."
Fraser: "No she didn't. She deserved you. And I'm not going to make the
same mistake. Victoria is in trouble. Now... she scares the hell out of
me. I don't even know if I can help her but I know that I need to be
here. And I know who she is."
Father's Ghost: "Purgatory. For my sins I have to watch you make stupid
mistakes. And who gave you permission to use my pool table?"
Ray: "Give it a rest, Pop."
(Ray)
"I haven't been offered one."
"You should take it anyway."
"Hey Benny: not in your lifetime."
(Fraser and Ray)
Fraser: "Go away."
Fraser Sr.: "She's not coming back to you, and why in God's name would
you want her to?"
Fraser: Because... (trying to fight back tears) Because I... because I
need... Oh God."
Fraser Sr.: "You're not going to get it. Sometimes in life all you need
is that second chance. It's the one thing you're going to have."
Victoria: "You."
Fraser: "No, you don't."
Victoria: "Why do you think I did all of this?"
Fraser: "Revenge."
Victoria: "Maybe, but I need you. I want you to go away with me."
Fraser: "You know I can't do that."
Victoria: (aiming gun) "You son of a bitch! You set me up. I should
have shot you."
Fraser: "And I should have let you go."
Victoria: "Well, you're going to this time."
LETTING GO
(Fraser, to Diefenbaker, who is looking out the hospital windows.)
Ray: "I know that."
Fraser: "I mean you have a job. You should go to work."
Ray: "I do go to work."
Fraser: "When?"
Ray: "When you're asleep. You do that a lot, you know."
Fraser: "Oh."
(Ray to Fraser, in hospital room)
Fraser: "The nurses have all taken pity on him. They feed him. They water
him. They walk him regularly. They like him. He likes them. He eats
better than I do. I think he's even happier here. Ingrate."
Fraser Sr.: "Dead?"
Fraser: "Yes."
Fraser Sr.: "It's not a dirty word, son, you can say it."
Grandma: "Here, tell him to put these on they're warmer."
Fraser Sr.: "It's 70 degrees. These won't do him any good"
Fraser: "Who are you talking to?"
Fraser Sr.: "You don't see her?"
Fraser: "No."
Fraser Sr.: "It's your Grandmother. She brought you some pajamas."
Fraser: "Oh...thank her for me. Anybody else drop in?"
Fraser Sr.: "No, not so far."
Grandma: "You're babying him, Robert."
Fraser Sr.: "He's been shot, Mother!"
Grandma: "Can't stay in bed forever."
Fraser Sr.: "You didn't see her?"
Fraser: "How is she?"
Fraser Sr.: "Not dead enough, son."
(Robert Fraser, his mother, Benton Fraser)
(Fraser to Jill)
(Fraser to Ray)
(Jill to Fraser)
"A friend, actually. He was aiming for someone else."
"Who?"
"A woman. She had committed, uh, a crime and was attempting to
escape. He drew his weapon--"
"And you just happened to step in between?"
"Yes."
(Jill and Fraser)
(Jill)
"She's not a girl, she's a therapist."
"Then one of us is going blind. By the way, son could you see your
way clear to think of me in a pair of trunks?"
(Robert Fraser, Benton Fraser)
Ray: "So?"
Fraser: "He's betrayed her. She's going to kill him."
Ray: "Benny. Not every woman with long dark hair tries to kill her lover."
Fraser: "Oh."
"Yes, I've got two axes..."
(Fraser)
(Fraser to Jill re case)
Fraser: "I was going with her, you know."
Ray: "I know."
Fraser: "I understand that sometimes you can love someone so much that
you're willing to do almost anything for them. The power of that kind
of love can be very frightening."
Carter: "I don't care."
Fraser: "Oh, I think you do care. I think you care so deeply that when
he betrayed you, you tried to do the only thing that made sense. You
tried to destroy yourself. Don't let him do this to you."
Ray: "Of course it hurts."
Fraser: "Thanks."
Ray: "For what? Getting shot?"
Fraser: "Yeah."
Ray: "Yeah. Figured you'd like that."
Fraser: "Well, I'm not proud about that but I'll admit I did get a sort
of perverse pleasure out of it."
Ray: "Ah hah. You see. You were mad at me."
Fraser: "Well, you shot me in the back."
Ray: "Well, that was an accident."
Fraser: "Well, I know, so was yours. I mean, it was an accident, wasn't it?"
Ray: "Yeah, of course it was."
Fraser: "Well, there you go. Enough said. Even Steven."
Ray: "Even Steven? Just give me those binoculars, will you? Even Steven.
Nobody says even Steven anymore."
Fraser: "Really?"
Ray: "Yes."
Fraser: "Why?"
Ray: "It's juvenile."
Fraser: "Oh dear."
Ray: "Is there something going on in that window over there?"
