IRC LOG
Paul Haggis

November 25, 1996

Listed below is an IRC log that Paul Haggis did while his show EZ Streets was airing on CBS. The discussion is predominantly about that series, although Due South is mentioned. It was originally housed on an EZ Streets web site which has since vanished from the web. It is posted here on this site with Mr. Haggis' permission. (1/98)

<Ches> #duesouth is now moderated! If you would like to chat while waiting for tonights discussion, please go to #ds2! Thank You!

<gabs_> okay everyone, got your questions ready? and please remember to tell us your real name :)

<haggis> Hi guys.

    *** gabs_ is waiting

<Mir1> Paul - OK, you can type whatever and whenevr you want, and we'll get the questions rolling.

<IWAT> welcome Mr. Haggis!

*** Chamber has quit IRC (Chamber)

<Mir1> Now everyone is going to clam up, I can see it. ;-)

<gabs> here we go...

<gabs> From Bonnie MacGowan: As you may know, Kathy calls me DS's little good luck charm (since I was born the day DS came back on CBS for season 2) - so, for my 1st birthday (Dec. 8) feel free to get me a DS renewal! ;-) ;-)

<gabs> Marie Leonard here in Seattle. Mr. Haggis: What is your favorite DS episode?

<haggis> Victoria's Secret

<gabs> Patty Winter here: Mr. Haggis, how did your EZ Streets meeting with Les Moonves go on Friday?

<haggis> To Marie: but I also love Gift of the Wheelman

<gabs> (Nicole Parrot) Deep down in your heart, which show idea do you prefer? DS or EZ?

<haggis> Well, we're holding our breath, Patty.

<gabs> This is Quelin Newsom. Thank you for being so available to us. What can we do to assist in the revival of due South?

<haggis> Nicole, that's too tough, they're both my kids.

    *** MsFraser (jazz@jazz.interlog.com) has joined #duesouth

<gabs> *fmouse* Judy Stouffer here - TYK for your post! One of our biggest discussions has been about Diefenbaker getting shot in victoria's Secret. So: Who Shot Dief?

<haggis> Quelin -- not a lot right now. Letters to Alliance wouldn't hurt, but they're just seeing if it makes financial sense right now.

<haggis> Oooo, that mean old Victoria did.

<IWAT> hee

<gabs> *AnnT* Ann Teitelbaum here from the Bay Area! Do you have a feeling that the network heads listen to anything but Nielsen families?

    *** Mikey_J (~mjdst36@ehdup-c1-1.rmt.net.pitt.edu) has joined #duesouth

<gabs> *geolass* Sherry Haas here. Question from my hubby--are you the brains behind Walker, Texas Ranger?

<haggis> Ann -- letters do help, but you need thousands of them to make a dent.

*** AndMeToo has quit IRC (Ping timeout)

<gabs> *Akeitz* Annie Keitz: In all the shows you've created, who is your favorite character?

<haggis> There were very few brain cells necessary to create it.

<Mir1> LOL!!!! HEE! (sorry)

    *** Starling- (portia@rvl-md4-34.ix.netcom.com) has joined #duesouth

<gabs> *Shru* Heather (ShroomMate) here: Thank you kindly for the help to Columbia College--If you had to choose between working on EZ Streets or DS again, which would you pick?

    *** BasicC (C.Law@109.chicago-002.il.dial-access.att.net) has left #duesouth

<haggis> Annie -- again, too tough. I love Fraser, I love my new characters.

<gabs> *mleonard* Marie Leonard asks Mr. Haggis: If DS got another season, would you write for it?

<IWAT> gabs... seeing double?

<gabs> cath: doin' okay here :)

<gabs> *atqh* Cecilia Lee in St. Louis How much of Fraser's character was dcreated before the series began, and how much was developed as you went along?

<haggis> Heather: you're welcome.

<haggis> can we slow down a bit? My fingers don't go that fast.

<gabs> sorry, I'm trying to keep up with screen scroll. I'll slow down

    *** AndMeToo (AD@dyn124-167.win.mnsi.net) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Between EZ and DS -- you guys are mean.

<haggis> Re: Fraser' character -- it sprang solid out of my head, unfortunately. Then Paul brought it to life.

<gabs> okay, more questions yet?

<gabs> er I mean to the chanel -- I have tonnes in the wings

<gabs> channel even :)

<haggis> sure

    *** AnnT (~moo@moo.dial-up.bdt.com) has left #duesouth

<gabs> *PonyG1* From Paula Smus: Are you planning any other new series yet?

<haggis> Not yet, Paula. I'm waiting to see what happens with EZ. Till then, I'm doing some research on a movie.

<gabs> *swansonj* Jennifer Swanson - Welcome!:-) What other programs besides DS and EZ have you worked on?

<haggis> Well, thirtysomething, LA Law, Tracey Ullman Show, City...and about seven or eight others.

<gabs> *fmouse* Judy Stouffer here - what is the funniest practical joke you remember happening on the Due South set

<gabs> I've been told the questions are coming through twice. are they?

<Mir1> Gabs, yes.

<haggis> yes.

<IWAT> yes

<IWAT> oops..sorry GMTA I guess :)

<gabs> how odd. sorry, tech difficulties, I don't know what's wrong :(

<haggis> Re: jokes. The funniest thing I saw were the "trailer wars" between PG and DM. Have you heard about them?

<gabs> please forget the second copy :)

<IWAT> ooo no do tell please

<gabs> trailer wars??? do tell!

<Mir1> Gabs - The last one didn't from Judy, but the others have been - two copies in one line, not two separate messages.

<gabs> mir: ah, okay. itchy trigger finger, maybe :)

    *** DebW (dwalheim@172-73-177.ipt.aol.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Well, I think it started with PG. His trailer was a tiny bit larger than David's, and he liked to point that out ;). Then he started the rumor that he was installing a pool outside his trailer (more)

*** gabs takes this opportunity to breathe :)

<haggis> PG had his driver go out and get an kids pool and inflated it, filled it up with a couple gallons of water and would sit there on a deck chair with his bare feet in it. (more)

<gabs> ROTFL!!!

<Mir1> LOL!!!!!

<IWAT> GIGGLE! outside his trailer (more) a lawn chair (more)

<haggis> So Paul went out and got plastic flamingos (more)

    *** ARTFISH (~ARTFISH@33-251.client.gnn.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> David got an beach umbrella (more)

<haggis> Then pg went out and got an entire statuary.

    *** ARTFISH (~ARTFISH@33-251.client.gnn.com) has left #duesouth

<Mir1> LOL!!!!!

<Mir1> HEE!!!!

<gabs> okay, onward?

<haggis> This went on for the entire first season, until it took three or four drivers just to pack the stuff up every time we moved to a different location.

<haggis> onward

    *** gabs giggles uncontrollably

<gabs> *misscleo* (Nicole Parrot) on Who shot Dief again, we have this theory that he shot himself in order to frame Victoria... Do you think it's possible ? ;-)

<Mir1> Paul - People are rolling in the aisles in the chat channel too, incidentally!!!

<haggis> Nicole, I suspected as much myself.

*** geolass has quit IRC (geolass)

<gabs> that is just *too* funny!

<haggis> okay, so now we can all say mean things about geoglass

<gabs> *RedSuitsU* Quelin Newsom again: What do you feel is the stand-out quality about Ken Olin as an actor?

    *** geolass (~sptradr@pri4-21.ionet.net) has joined #duesouth

<gabs> LOL!

<Mir1> Darn, she's back. ;)

<haggis> His ability to find the soul of the character, beneath what I've written.

<gabs> *SWABK2* (Brian and Sandy MacGowan - the Great Bug's Parents) Have you ever thought of creating a series based out of Maritime Canada?

<haggis> People were saying mean things about you geoglass. I tried to stop them.

<haggis> The martimes are wonderful.

<gabs> *DonnaG* Donna Gabriel here; do we know when DS will be shown on cable in the USA?

<haggis> I hope some kind soul will later correct my spelling.

<gabs> Paul: we might, if you're lucky :)

<haggis> Sorry, no idea. I think they need another season before they can sell it to cable.

<IWAT> Paul, it just means you are one of us :)

*** Lillian has quit IRC (Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true)

<Mir1> Paul - I was born to copy edit. (hint, hint) <grin!!>

<haggis> Okay, time to dish Lillian.

<gabs> *AnnT* Ann T again -- Just wanted to thank you for the creation of the _friendship_ between Fraser and Ray -- that's why I watched and love the show!

<haggis> Thanks, Ann

<gabs> *Stadlers* Jeanne Stadler Do you enjoy writing for your regular characters more, or for your guest characters more?

*** AnnT has quit IRC (Ping timeout)

<haggis> If you enjoy writing for guest characters more than your regulars, then you should get rid of your regulars.

<gabs> *MsFraser* Jazz here -- Wondering why in Flashback, there wasn't really any "closure" to Fraser & Thatcher's relationship.....if DS were back, would you have them romantically involved?

    *** AnnT (~moo@moo.dial-up.bdt.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Sorry, wasn't around for Flashback. Haven't seen it yet.

<gabs> *geolass* Sherry Haas could you give us a little history on the development of DS?

    *** Bronwyn (david@hd11-081.compuserve.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Sure.

<gabs> *Shru* Heather (again): Do you have anything lined up should (horrors!) EZ Streets and DS not make the cut?

<gabs> BTW, please forgive me if there are repeat questions from differnt people. I don't have much time to read what I'm copying...

<haggis> CBS came to me and said "can you do something about a trapper or a mountie who comes to big city USA. (It was Robert Lantos who brought that idea to them.) (more)

<haggis> I thought it was the worst idea I'd ever heard (more)

<haggis> Then I sat around, feeling sorry for myself, saying "why do they always do this to me"? (more)

<haggis> And then suddenly, I got an idea of how to do it and have a lot of fun with the characters. I sat down and came up with Fraser (more)

*** fmouse has quit IRC (Connection timed out)

<haggis> based on all those great serials from the fifties (more)

<GiggleCat> ack judy!!!!! :(

<GiggleCat> oops sorry

*** Bronwyn has quit IRC (Changing Servers)

<haggis> and then, having created the perfect, stereotypical Canadian, I said "OK, that's what Americans think of Canadians..." (more)

    *** fmouse (~mjstouff@wug.execpc.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> "So, what do Canadians think about Americans?" (more)

<haggis> "well", I said to myself...

<haggis> They think they all pack guns (more)

<haggis> they are incredibly rude (more)

<haggis> shoot first, ask questions later.

<haggis> So, I came up with Ray.

*** geolass has quit IRC (geolass)

<haggis> When I had the two of them, I had a show.

<haggis> I think geolass took us seriously.

    *** Bron (david@hd11-081.compuserve.com) has joined #duesouth

<gabs> hee!

<gabs> *Gander* From Karen Cleveland: Do you see DS as opening the door for more foreign produced shows on US networks? As an experiment that didn't succeed/CBS didn't allow to succeed?

    *** geolass (~sptradr@pri4-21.ionet.net) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Absolutely. DS was the first non-US show on any American network.

<gabs> *RedSuitsU* Quelin Newsom Again: What do you think of our "projects" like RCW-139, Duesapalooza, fan fic etc?

<haggis> I think they're awful, and a complete waste of time.

<IWAT> er?

<haggis> I just saw forty people log off.

<Mir1> HEE!!!!

<Mir1> LOL.

<gabs> *Shru* Heather here: How did you get started, writing, or were you once a lowly P.A.?

    *** Fouine (~jdrviau@ttyC6.granby.mtl.net) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> No, I think you guys are doing a FABULOUS thing, keeping DS alive in cyberspace.

<haggis> Heather -- I started out writing theatre (more)

<haggis> Some of the worst plays ever to grace the Canadian stage.

<haggis> Shortly after that, I was expelled from Canada.

<gabs> LOL!

<Mir1> ah.

<haggis> Seriously, they were awful (more)

<IWAT> HEE!

<haggis> I wrote my first play when I was 19 (more)

<haggis> It was based on (stolen from) CS Lewis' Narnia chronicles (more)

<haggis> My sister, Kathy -- an actress then -- played the Witch.

<haggis> The reviews were...not kind.

<Mir1> Paul - Just a quick note, just wanted to make sure you know that :) is a smiley face. (Oh, goodness, I've been using them in my emails to you, so if you don't know what they are you probably think I'm a TOTAL jerk. :))

*** Calli has quit IRC (Connection reset by peer)

<Mir1> oops, sorry, didn't mean to interrupt.

*** RedSuitsU has quit IRC ('nough said.)

<haggis> My second "play" was a "comedy" review, entitled "OW Canada" (more)

<haggis> Kathy was in that, too. (more)

<haggis> It was supposed to be about 90 minutes long. (more)

<haggis> Opening night, it ran over three hours. (more)

    *** state (youknowita@149.171.73.46) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> Actors fell off the stage, the lights came up in the wrong places, it was one of the worst experiences in theatre history (more)

<gabs> Paul: if it's easier, you can just let me know when you're ready for the next question -- I can wait 'til then to paste :)

<haggis> It was supposed to preview for a week, and then run for eight weeks (more)

<haggis> We decided to preview for six weeks, then open for two.

<haggis> The reviewer came to see it twice, once in previews, once when it finally opened.

<haggis> The first words of his second review were "I must be a masochist".

<haggis> It was shortly after that that I was asked to leave the country. paste :)

<gabs> *PattyW* From Patty Winter: A comment rather than a question--I just want to mention that after all this time, Victoria's Secret is still by far the most talked about episode on DSOUTH-L. Thank you for giving us such a memorable, richly textured two hours of television.

<haggis> Cool

<haggis> I wrote it in about five days.

<haggis> At the time, I had no idea if it was going to turn out.

<haggis> gabs?

<gabs> *geolass* Sherry Haas TYK could you give us some bacground on the development of DS?

*** Bron has quit IRC (Changing Servers)

<gabs> well, we've kinda covered that one already..

<haggis> That's what you get for leaving us, Sherry.

<IWAT> gabs I have one from someone if you are lacking in questions <g>

<gabs> cath: I have tonnes.

<gabs> *ScottC* Please ask Paul where the best crews are? Toronto or LA?

<gabs> scott: you evil one, you! <VBG>

    *** IWAT giggles

<haggis> btw, I've noticed that this a very nice group. Too nice. I think I've done something terrible.

<gabs> LOL!

    *** Bronwyn (david@hd11-081.compuserve.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> I've turned you all into Canadians.

<haggis> don't get me in trouble, Scott.

<gabs> some of us *are* CDN :)

<Mir1> I'm a wanna-be Canadian, myself.

<IWAT> I am Cdn!

<gabs> *DebW* "DebW" Debbie Walheim -- Will there be any recurring guest characters on EZ Streets?

<haggis> BTW, it's a terrific myth that Canadians are nice. Some of the meanest people I've ever met are Canadian. I just can't think of them right now.

<haggis> Yeah, bunches of them. (more)

<Mir1> HEE!

<haggis> There's Sammy Feathers, there's Leo, there's Father Mac (played by Beau Starr)

<haggis> gabs?

<gabs> *misscleo* (Nicole yet again) how aware were you of comments made by fans on the mailing lists (during the first or second season)? Did we influence the show just a tiny bit?

<haggis> And Hi, Deb!

<haggis> Sorry, I wasn't on line then. (more)

<haggis> But Scott would print them out for us from time to time, and they were terrific to read. (more)

*** Paws has quit IRC (Connection reset by peer)

<haggis> However, in the early days, we got a lot of complaints about DS. (more)

<haggis> Especially from Canadians, who believed I was sacking the Canadian identity.

<haggis> Occassionally, I would write back to some fans, when I had the time.

<haggis> I remember apologizing to several of them for some of the episodes --

<haggis> not that they were "offensive", but that they were just plain bad.

<haggis> okay, so no one has tried this question I bet -- which is your LEAST FAVORITE episode? What did I do that REALLY STUNK?

<IWAT> ooooo good one paul! :)

<gabs> paul: that was gonna be mine, once I got through the rest :)

<gabs> but not quite in those words :)

<haggis> I don't believe that, Gabs, you're too damn nice.

    *** gabs blushes :)

<haggis> over to you, gabs.

<gabs> *MsFraser* Jazz here again :) -- just wondering how it came to be that Paul Gross was casted as the mountie and David Marciano as the cop?

<haggis> Maybe I can start a fight here or something. :)

<haggis> Okay, jazz, I'll answer that.

<gabs> a food fight, maybe. we have lots of those... :)

<haggis> I looked for about six months to find Fraser (more)

    *** Mir1 throws a donut with sprinkles.

<IWAT> I have the weapons for it if you need them :)

*** fmouse has quit IRC (Leaving)
    *** state (youknowita@149.171.73.46) has left #duesouth

<haggis> We cast in Toronto, Vancouver, LA, NYC and London (England.) More

<haggis> Early on, the casting director said "You have to see this guy, Paul Gross"

<haggis> I watched his demo tape -- it was just awful.

<IWAT> hee!

<haggis> He was doing some scene from a CBC miniseries.

<haggis> He was dressed as a redcoat (with a high collar), astride a horse.

<haggis> And he looked..ridiculous

<IWAT> Chasing Rainbows

<haggis> So, I said to Nan, my casting director -- "He's chubby and he can't act"

<Mir1> HEE!!! LOL!!!!!!

<haggis> About five months later, the CBS person said again, you have to see PG...

<gabs> hmm, I wonder if we should forward a copy of this log to Mr. Gross... ;)

<IWAT> gabs, hee!

<haggis> So I met with him...and within two minutes, I knew he was Fraser.

<haggis> And please send this to Paul Gross.

<haggis> re: David...

<haggis> I looked forever for "Ray"

<haggis> David finally came into read, and the first thing he said was "I can't play this guy".

<haggis> But the way he said it, I knew he WAS Ray.

<haggis> So I told him not to bother reading that day, to go home, take his time with the material and come back.

<haggis> So he did, about two days later...

<Ches> You should see the channel falling apart laughing over this story! :)

<haggis> And he says to me: "Now I KNOW I can't play this guy"

    *** IWAT giggles

<haggis> So, I say, "Yeah, I'm sure you're right. But...."

<haggis> "Let's just read this scene, okay?"

    *** fmouse (~mjstouff@wug.execpc.com) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> and so we did, and I knew he was Ray.

<haggis> But a year later, he was still saying he had no idea who Ray was.

<haggis> I kept trying to convince him that he WAS Ray, so he should just stop worrying.

<haggis> They're both terrific guys, and I miss them dearly.

<haggis> Gabs?

<gabs> *Cush* Melissa C. Banczak here, when you started did you have the idea to use Fraser Sr as a ghost

<Mir1> Paul - I have a message to relay from everyone: We are on the floor in hysterics, turning blue, please stop being so funny or we may die right here. Well, I'm paraphrasing.

<GRIN>

<IWAT> ah, but worrying is a part of Ray :)

<IWAT> mir, <g>

<haggis> Melissa: No. I'll tell you about that (and stop laughing gabs and Mirl, this is serious)

<haggis> We were in a bar in the Yukon, shooting the pilot...

<haggis> And he's saying to me "I really enjoyed this".

<haggis> So, I say "I'm going to bring you back".

<haggis> At which point he falls off the bar stool

<haggis> So, I pick him up (ok, so I embelish a little)...

    *** IngR (ravary@Ocean.CAM.ORG) has joined #duesouth

<haggis> And he thinks my recent operation didn't go well, and leaves it at that.

<Mir1> HEE!!!!!

<haggis> So, a few months later, I decided it was time...Christmas time, to be exact, when we all see ghosts...

*** MsFraser has quit IRC (Gone with the "angels".....:))

<haggis> And, as usual, I said to myself "well, if there's one thing that Fraser wishes, what would it be?"

    *** Serrak (Serrak@poste55-41.ulaval.ca) has left #duesouth

<IWAT> that's sweet :)

<haggis> And the answer was...he believes he could live up to his father.

<haggis> So, I bring back Fraser Sr., just to show him that one should be careful what one wishes.

<haggis> Gabs?

<gabs> *EileenD* Eileen Dreyer What is the most difficult and the most fun aspects of creating shows like EZ and DS?

<haggis> Hearing the characters walk about in my head for the first time.

<haggis> PG and DM are both thinking about it. They haven't decided.

<haggis> But then, I'm not really in the loop.

<haggis> Gabs?

<gabs> *Stadlers* Jeanne Stadler Are you surprised at the very positive reaction to Due South from countries outside of Canada and the US?

<haggis> Surprised? No. Stunned. Did I tell you what happened when PG and I went to England?

<IWAT> no, but please do tell us now :)
