Brief Synopsis

Fraser tries to organize a neighborhood watch group with some of the senior citizens in the community. However, he discovers that one of the citizens believes in taking on crime in a more active way -- with a baseball bat.

Detailed Overview

Fraser inspires a group of senior citizens to stand up against crime and form a neighborhood watch. Unfortunately, he also inspires an elderly vigilante who believes the only way to rid the streets of criminals is to fight back with a baseball bat.

Ray finds his troubles doubled: not only must he find a mugger who seems to be able to blend into the background at will but he must also track down the vigilante. When Fraser cleverly deduces who is behind the muggings, Ray must turn for help to Herb Colling, a long time local resident and the only one capable of identifying the mugger. Ray is surprised when Herb refuses to identify the suspect, but this only confirms Fraser's suspicions: Herb is the vigilante and he has his own brand of justice in mind.

Herb sets a trap for the mugger that night in the local park. Fraser and Ray must find Herb before he can commit his final act of vengeance, both to save the mugger and to save Herb from becoming what he hates most.

Meanwhile, Diefenbaker has trouble of his own. With Fraser preoccupied with the criminal investigation, Diefenbaker has been virtually adopted by one of the women at the senior's center whose only fault appears to be a compulsion to knit. The poor wolf desperately hopes that Fraser can solve the crime before he is forced to wear crocheted booties on all four paws.

Interesting Trivia

  • The production crew had to cart in truckloads of snow because they had a 'warm-up' in Toronto and all the snow melted before they were finished shooting some of the park scenes.
  • Rummy Bishop makes his second appearance in this episode as Mr. Rubens. You may recognize him as the cleanser salesman in "Free Willie" and as Ray's Uncle Lorenzo in "Some Like it Red."
