The Original Purpose
Although
I had always planned to hitch-up & hit the road with my American Classic,
the original reason my Overlander was acquired was to have backup living accommodations
in case the construction of a planned house addition rendered our home
unlivable for a brief amount of time. At
acquisition, nothing inside the trailer worked, and the goal was to address
whatever functional repairs were necessary to make it habitable. But since we ended up not adding on to the
house after the Airstream had already made its way to my driveway, the next
many months were spent refurbing the trailer for Airstream
Inc.’s intended purpose.
That
was three years & 6000 miles of camping trips ago, and my wife never forgot
about the house addition. So, armed with
a better set of plans, we started construction on what I call “Project Big Tub” earlier
this year:
Up
until now the weather has been nice, and there has been no reason to leave the
house in spite of missing a big chunk of one exterior wall. But then a squad of painters hit the scene:
Between
priming & painting the new construction and painting part of the old
construction to tie it all together, the air was P-O-T-E-N-T with the smell of
latex paint. It was obviously time to go
somewhere else for the evening.
Airstream to the rescue!
Having
an inkling that a “rescue” would probably occur in the next few days, the
Overlander’s water tank had already been filled, and the fridge stocked with
bottled water & soda. The addition
of a CATV drop this year truly makes the Airstream a home-away-from-home.
The
problem was that no one wanted to leave the next morning! The only way I could get the Boyz out was to
remind them that we will probably be Airstreamin’ for
at least three days once sanding & staining of the hardwood floors gets
underway. But I may declare another
rescue is necessary if they are especially good…
