Day 23
We’re a couple of days into Spring
now, and the crabapple tree’s blooms almost hide the new construction. Well, kind of:

Instead
of a small number of big payments, the builder is paid a predetermined percentage
of the total cost weekly based on the project’s level of completeness. Although the roof is not finished, since this
week’s payment was due only if the windows were installed, the builder
installed them. Below is The Tub’s
window:

Below
is the present view out of our new bedroom.
The master bedroom will have a coffer ceiling. Two 2X16 double glue-lams (super strong
wooden beams) on either side of the room are required in order to safely span
the distance. Notice that the wall studs
line up exactly with the roof rafters. In
a cross section view of the new work you would also see that the wall studs
also line up exactly with the floor joists.
While not required by code, this is a mark of quality construction. It is obvious that Shawn of Home Masters takes great pride in his
work.

Notice
the green, pressure treated lumber outlining the chimney area? While no one wants the new chimney to leak,
if it does, the new framing will definitely survive much longer than the old
stuff did.

Like a Lazarus, the new chimney with its new laid, linked, and bonded brick rises
from the construction.

The present view out of the kitchen window:

I considered doing a “Hello Jared, this is the Lord
talking” routine, but was concerned he might come up the ladder if he saw me:

The
bench in the lower RH corner of the picture has been a big hit with my neighbor
Carl. He comes over many times daily to
monitor construction details.
