Project Big Tub Is Done
Jon, Christie, and Will did an outstanding job sanding and
staining the floors. I could not be
happier with their collective attention to detail. But…![]()
Seriously, I am happy, and would call them again
tomorrow. Our agreement, which is
somewhat standard in the trade, had been for them to sand, stain, and apply two coats of polyurethane. They did exactly what we agreed upon. But with only two coats of poly, the general
appearance of the repaired area by Big Door ended up not matching the existing
floor with its now four coats of
poly. No fault by Jon, so I knew that,
with his schedule, it would be tough getting him back to do anything about it.
Remember the tools pictured in Day 154? Two tools of this trade that were not
pictured are a polyurethane brush & roller, and I have a lot of experience
with those tools. After scuff-sanding
with a random-orbit sander, a third coat of poly was applied, and the area
barricaded off with tape & folding chairs.
After later discovering evidence that at least one of the Boyz does not have flat feet,
the area was once again sanded & polyed.
Substituting razor wire for the masking tape
, this
effort cured with no “remembrances”, and now matched the finish of the original
floor.

That’s Big Door on the right:

Hallway:

The old master bedroom:

This bedroom is considered to be my room, and great things
are slated to go in it --- once I build the cabinets to put the stuff in.
Right now, all my books are stacked behind
door number 2 and my Superman collection is still out in the shop.
I did manage to get part of my clock collection hung on the
wall by the new window though:

The master plan for the laundry room includes doors for the
wall cabinet & sink front. But since
laundry rooms are not typically part of a house tour, door construction has dropped
pretty low on the priorities list.

While I was occupied with my
details, Kim was busy with hers:

Perhaps one day I will purchase an expensive camera with a
lens that can capture an entire room in one shot. But until then, here’s part of the new master
bedroom:

Big Tub’s exterior could use a few plants & shrubs, but
that was always slated to be next year’s effort. With the fence back up, we can now think
about getting that puppy Daniel has wanted for some time:

Kim and I consider the Big Tub Project essentially complete. Granted the construction was peppered with surprises,
but I do not think we had an unusual time with the effort. Many different tradesmen contributed to the
construction, and I personally thanked everyone whose end product met my
standards. To the builder’s credit, I
thanked a lot of people.![]()
Thanks for reading, and I hope you have enjoyed the tale of
Big Tub. Don’t expect a docudrama on
another project anytime soon – We’re tired!
The end? ![]()
