TOPIC: ACADEMIC SKILLS for Baccalaureate Nursing Education

This course, Introduction to Nursing, begins your preparation for two roles - nursing student and nurse. Being a successful student of professional nursing calls for the development of complex and demanding academic skills. The abilities needed to graduate and pass the state boards are many of the same abilities needed to select appropriate, compassionate, and realistic nursing care. The sooner a student starts to practice the following skills, the stronger her/ his academic record will become. This is especially important since students

  • must make 75 or higher in a nursing course to proceed to the next nursing course
  • are dismissed from the program if they earn less than 75 in two nursing courses.

This first course in the nursing sequence will evaluate a student's commitment to and ability to

  • Comprehend a heavy, ongoing reading load
  • Combine and apply new knowledge under the stress of test taking
  • Arrange her/ his time to prepare for two important tests/papers on the same date
  • Write at a college level
  • Apply logic to computational problems
