Assignment For Class #6 : The Interview

DATE DUE:

PRIOR TO CLASS 6

LEARN ABOUT INQUIRY AS A NURSING SKILL

  1. READ the handout on Interviewing.

  2. DOWNLOAD the GUIDELINES FOR INTERVIEWING under the topic PRINCIPLES OF INQUIRY. The guidelines are posted on Class 6 on the course web site. Imagine yourself going through these steps as you interview your nutritional client.  BRING THIS TO CLASS FOR PRACTICE.

  3. DOWNLOAD CLIENT ASSESSMENT under the topic NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT. This assessment format is posted on Class 6. BRING THIS TO CLASS FOR PRACTICE.

  4. READ Meltzer Ch. 13 (Active listening & successful note taking)

  5. READ Potter & Perry Ch 7 (Assessment)

  6. RECALL specific examples of people inquiring about your health/feelings. What made the difference between a superficial inquiry and an act of caring? Where some inquiries too intrusive? Prepare to write & to talk about this in class.

PLAN A GENERAL THEN FOCUSED CLIENT ASSESSMENT

  1. SELECT A WILLING "CLIENT"

  2. WITH THIS CLIENT, PLAN A TIME AND PLACE FOR THE ASSESSMENT

In addition to timing and privacy concerns for your client, make sure the arrangements provide safety for you. Be prepared to give the details of these arrangements to your instructor in class, including the name(s) of those who will know where you are and when you are coming back.

  3. DOWNLOAD GORDON'S 11 FUNCTIONAL PATTERNS with their questions.

These are posted on Class 5. For each of the Patterns re-read the list of questions that evaluate a client's level of functioning in that Pattern. Consider your particular "client". Are there additional questions that you should add to the interview to get an accurate overview of this client's health? If so, add them. Plan to use this expanded list to make the general assessment of the client you selected for your first care plan.

BRING THIS EXPANDED LIST TO CLASS FOR PRACTICE.

  4. We will practice this whole process Class 6. You will get much more out of the practice if you imagine yourself actually asking the questions and using beneficial interviewing techniques before you come to class.

REMINDER: You need the 3 lists that you downloaded to do the practicing in class.
