Introduction:

When two farmers illegally sell produce on the side of the road, Barney orders them to move to a location further from town.  The farmers defy and intimidate Barney, and he drives away scared.

Lesson Points:

Disrespect for the Law—Neil and Matt  (Proverbs 28:4-5, Romans 13:1-7)

Fear and Courage—Barney  (Deut. 31:6-8, Isaiah 35:4, Ezekiel 2:3-7, Hebrews 13:6)

Courage is not the absence of fear, but resistance to fear. —Mark Twain

Discussion:

1.   Why didn’t the farmers take Barney seriously at their first encounter?

2.   Why didn’t Barney tell Andy what was troubling him?

3.   Andy tried to enhance Barney’s self-esteem by convincing the farmers that Barney was a coldhearted killer.  Did this help or just make matters worse?

4.   Why did the two farmers finally decide to move?

Final Thought:

Barney:  “Do you see this badge?  It says that I’m sworn to uphold the law.  You’re both a lot bigger than I am, but this badge represents a lot of people who are a lot bigger than either one of you.  Now are you going to get moving?”
