The river gotit's name from early French cartographers that called the Alabama river, "RIVIERE DES ALIBAMONS". The Alabama Indians were an Upper Creek tribe known to the French as early as 1702 as the "Alibamons". The name Alibamons translates as the word "thicket clearers" from Choctaw alba plants and amo to cut or gather, which was understood to be a medicinal plant.
