Ed Seigler's RV-6 Project
The July, 2000 meeting was held in Ed's garage/workshop. His RV-6 slider is coming along nicely, and there is great incentive to get the fuse on the gear since there is a really purdy motor sitting in the shop! The engine is a freshly rebuilt O-360 with fuel injection. Ed (striped shirt) intends to fly it with a fixed-pitch metal prop.
Christmas in July! We just had to pop the top off the crate holding the finish kit and ogle the goodies. All the steel parts are now shipped with gray powder coat.
The fuse is ready for the finish kit. Workmanship is first-class.
The fuse is almost ready for installation of the engine mount and main landing gear.
Here is the real boss of the shop! We are not sure if the cat has learned how to buck rivets.....
Update 1/9/01;
The latest version of Ed's 190 mph "canoe".......complete with rain cover, er, canopy.
Update 6/19/01; Ed is ready to nail down the engine and panel installations in his RV-6.
A careful look will reveal that Ed has upgraded his kit with the Team Rocket gear and intersection fairings and Vans pressure recovery wheel pants.
The engine is an O-360 (fixed pitch Sensenich metal prop) that was built as an experimental engine by a shop in North Carolina.
Another upgrade is the epoxy cowl which arrived with the intake scoop already bonded to the cowl. Randall Eckstein is already figuring out a way to improve the carb heat system.......
11/16/02 The big day arrived (no, not the first flight......the move to the airport!), and Ed submitted the following report.
"Many thanks to Randall Eckstein for the use of his trailer; thought it was way too large 'til I got the bird on it; got much smaller then!"
"After too many years, my -6 has a new home for completion!" "Terry Burks is on the left; Gordie Seuell on right. Gordie stored my wings for a (too) long time."
Ed and Jim Ray have built an impressive hangar at Moontown airport. The trailer has hauled several RVs to the airport!
"Bill Braddock on far left; Gordie Seuell on right."
12/7/02; Wings mounted! One of the major milestones of an RV project is when the wings are mated to the fuselage. In a very cold hangar, Ed, assisted by Bob and Sam, jumped this very important hurdle in the space of a couple hours.
First step is to very carefully level the plane to establish an accurate datum. The tail was hoisted with the engine stand so the longerons would be leveled fore/aft and side-to-side.
After it was determined the wings needed no adjustment to compensate for sweep (sometimes you just get lucky), Ed fabricated a fixture for setting the wing incidence.
The fixture was used with a level to set the incidence per the plans. Once again, due to Ed's superlative workmanship, and having slaughtered ten chickens in some sort of pagen ritual the night before, the wing incidence fell into place with only slight tweaking.
The final step was the very critcal drilling of the rear spar attachments. No mistakes allowed here!
A very relieved Ed Seigler in front of his airplane!
