Walter's 1969 Beetle
August 12, 2009
The wheels are painted and they are gorgeous. This task was complicated to pull off but wheels are the points of emphasis that establish the character of a car. The Beetle is going to look like it just rolled out of the factory! One wheel still has the mask in place. I now know why two-toned wheels are rarely seen--it takes a lot of patience and some craftsmanship to make them look good. I went through three mask designs before settling on the one that worked. But the results were worth the effort.
The carpet is in the car and it is very black which should really play well with the seats. The custom carpet kit is really nice with stitched edges and the fit is perfect. The shifter and E-brake handles have been painted and are back in the car. Not many details remain and the interior will be pretty much complete except for the doors. A decision is upcoming about whether to refurbish or replace the seat covers. My first impulse is to use SEM vinyl paint to freshen up portions of the seat covers. The covers are in good shape just faded where exposed to direct sunlight.
As hoped, the rear shelf carpet covers the ugly areas of the headliner. This makes the decision to retain the original headliner look even better! The carpet kit also covers the back of the rear seat.
