Some time people can be lost, confused, frustrated, and not knowing what to do. It will be great if helping hands are coming without being asked and giving a solution to our problems. This world is a beautiful place but yet there are so many problems that we have to deal with .New problems always coming and more facts of life must be faced. With these facts on our way, "CAN WE BE A GUIDING LIGHT FOR OTHERS " or What can be done to make the world to be a better place "today"?
There are so many tribes, races, values and habits which make things complicated. But there is a universal thing which all walks of life will be agreed upon , that is tender loving care or Kindness or LOVE to others. Some times it is also difficult just to express our care for others or love but with the kindness attitude things can be done easier..( or will it ? ........ I think I need some one with the expertise to help me to understand it better , please help, any one ? ). In Roslin orphanage there so many things that can be used as the means to help or giving sun shine to some others in darkness situation which they will not be having any progress in life ( unless if some helping hands are coming for them).Passing your ideas or thoughts can be a jump start and dealing with small children we must equipt our self with some plays or games and so far through singing we can teach the children so many things easier. The majority of the people surrounding the orphanage is limited in their views about facing the facts of life.Their minds and thoughts can be broaden and needs to be shaped up. Departing for these facts Roslin orphanage has made the initiation and decided to make a free library to the villagers. We have slowly built the library building which nearly completed and we have also a mobile library project for it ( for those who can't afford to come to the orphanage's library ). We have one car already available for this project to be started .Our problem at the moment is how to provide the books adequately for both static and mobile library projects. Any of you who wants to particitipate are welcome

The villagers are speaking in Bahasa Indonesia and our prime goal is to provide good books for the Primary and secondary school students. Any educational books will be great as well for everyone to read especially for the adult villagers, such as books about agricultural skills and practical daily related matters such as how to do carpenter's work, electrician and etc. At the moment I am looking for books about how to prevent Malaria and how to manage a clean and healthy environment. Sanitation matters almost non existance to the villager's daily living as they do not have enough clean water for their daily needs. It is quite common that they have to walk few kilo meters just for few buckets of their drinking water. The rain fall is limited and the clean water is too deep to get ( average of 60 to 100 meters deep).

Things are started from small, growing, bigger bigger, bigger, bigger then hopefully when on its peak can perform itís best thus useful for all.
The same thing with our orphans that we looked after since babies, we can only do our best, give them the best nutrition that we can afford and the best tools that we can give ( that is education) and hoping the children will be blooming when they become an adult. The main thing is to have them all involved on all the good works, introduced to them about the good values in life and keeping them under control as to make sure that the good things and good values only for them to follow.Bad things can be given as an example and teach them the consequences that must be dealt with if doing so.Only with a hard work and with full commitment we may possibly reached our goal (no guarantee).Any body wants to help? Please share your views and help us to know how to do it better. ..... It is up to us how we want it to spend our time.It is always nice to do things nice for our self but what about if we can do both for our self and others ? wouldn't it be more exciting and more fruitfull? We have been doing it for number of years and every time we were coming back from the trip we feel that we never get enough of it. It has been so nice to go there and doing small things for us but it mean a big thing to the less fortunate. It is always nice to come back from our trip with zero stress and not to deal with any fancy shopping but we were always enjoying the nature's beauty and organic food.Your small gift like a plastic ball can be a big thing for the villagers in Timor and even more as if we are playing together with them. A simple game can be so meaningful to the villager as to let them know that there are other games other than a worn out wheels or the other old games in town.( please click more to continue)

It is a joy for us to be able to pass some of our knowledge to others. Only through education that people can progress better and more competitive on facing this modern world.Roslin Orphanage will do it its best to do it. For two weeks 15 Singaporean students were sharing their expertise to teach the children some English , games and goal setting. It was a joy to see that the anthusiasm of the village children upon learnig to speak English , some common games , singing popular children songs in English like Old McDonald etc.The first day were 68 children attending and on the second day were 99 village children attending. We wish that we can ask more university students or voluteers to come and to participate on the efforts of bringing the education up for this area.
Nusa Tenggara Timur or N T T province has been the poorest province in Indonesia both in the things being able to be produced and the poorest in the education level. It is because of the minimum rain fall and not having enough schools for the villagers ( some of the schools are in a bad condition like not having a paved floor, holes on the walls, doorless , not enough seats and very bad desk). It is a big advantage to be a city school's student ..........(click more to continue)

Our orphanage can be a place for the children to grow and it can be a place for the villagers to have some lessons as well ( like the work shop that we just did recently with the Singaporean university students). So many things can be done at the orphanage.movingforward (26k image)
People are coming not just to visit the children but also using the premises to conduct some new skill training , cooking, my wife (Peggy) teaches how to make imitation (plastic) flower arrangement , cleaning and to learn how to deal with the small children which Ice breaker is the key to start dealing with the children and we must go down to their eye level . By doing so we can easily start the interaction with the children.
A simple baloon can be a great tool to educate them, a lot of fun can be generated from so many simple things as long as our method is excepted by the children.
We did an scene which single out honesty and at the end of the sesson we found out that it can be planted in their mind easily but we must constantly remind them about it for a period of time.To teach them about sanitation is very important as important as how to conserve the limited water supply in this part of the world.

It took us 11 months to make the building ready for the official opening, doing the main purpose and doing it for life.

our progress was slow but getting faster and faster(306k image)
Our progress is rather slow as all the necesarry things are either low in its standard(skill labors)and a difficult to get the supply of the building materials. Not only the distance to the shop but also the road condition was rather bad(unpaved road and narrow as well).we were doing it bit by bit but getting faster and faster as the labor gets the hold of the skill better.Equipments wise everything are based on manual things, such as to lift up all the stone for the buliding foundation, bringing the water, mixing the cement and bricks laying. It was a complete hard labor without machinary what so ever.It was hard but it can be done.

Greetings from Singapore

Thank you for visiting our blog.

Here is some back ground of how and when we were starting our orphanage activities and many more activities related to our Roslin orphanage.

It was in the middle of no where and was nothing on it when we built it. The surroundings were also empty and so dry where nothing can grow on its soil.

These are the picture that may be able to show you when we started the orphanage building.

Foto1 (11k image)

The heat and the dryness was making things so hard to do. Even for mixing the cement we have to buy water which coming in trucks. Up to now we are still buying water for our daily needs. Actually water is available but it is too deep to bring it up from the depth of 70 to 100 meters from the surface. Things was rather slow but we beat the planning by a great number. We planned to build it in 5 years but we did it in 11 months .

In the beginning (43k image)

We planned it to make some 3 to 5 rooms house but we made it into 45 X 29 meters building.

It is so much to do as we have committed to do it for life.

From now and then we will make new entries about our progresses and please visit us again and again, make suggestions to us so that we can make a better progress accordingly.

Started with few children but now we are having a lot of children under our care.

Testing a Video Clip

Thanks to Mona's visits, I woke up this morning to find out that we have had quite a number of visitors plus few comments. I didn't expect that much visitors yet, since I haven't announced it in other mailing lists, awaiting Pak Budi's arrival back in Singapore from the Big Apple.

Since I have little time to kill this morning, let's have some fun with a video clip with the children there. (please click on [more] to continue)...

Our First Blog Entry

After few long distance discussions and email exchanges, finally Captain Budi and I decided to add this blog as a mean to update the information on Roslin Orphanage in Matani, a small town near Penfui El Tari Airport in my old hometown, Kupang, Timor, Indonesia.

I became interested in Roslin Orphanage when a member of Bolelebo mailing list, Mrs. Nanik Trickey from Washington State mentioned about Captain Budi's involvement in Mobile Library for the students from the villages around Kupang. We have been talking about the possibility of collecting the books from the United States then sent them to Kupang with the list members....(please click [more] to continue)
