News Item, Jan, 15, 2006: Redwood KVM Sales prepares XP4000 system for Chinese Laboratory.
Redwood KVM Sales will design and ship a XP4000 system to a Chinese laboratory for a major communications manufacturer. The system features multimedia. Redwood has modified the XPAC cards to eliminate the need for expensive multimedia cables. This modification allows the combination of a standard XP cable and a low cost audio cable to replace the multimedia cable. A similar Redwood supplied system has been sucessfully operating in a California research laboratory for about two years.

The decision by Avocent to discontinue the sale of all XP4000 products
after March 31, 2005 has many companies wondering if they should also switch to the Avocent AMX system.
There is no need to make this switch as several Avocent resellers have very large inventories of XP4000 hardware.
We believe that the life of the XP systems can be extended until at least the year 2010.
We will provide technical support and product availability information to current and future system users.
Several Avocent resellers have been hoarding XP hardware for more than a year in anticipation of this announcement.
A very large and growing inventory is already in place to support current and future requirements
A major cable manufacturer has agreed to continue making cables for these systems.
This company has already manufactured approximately 200,000 cables for Cybex/Avocent KVM products.
Most of the experienced Avocent resellers appreciate the many advantages of Cybex XP technology.

Redwood KVM Sales (256-694-7586) will be happy to answer questions about using XP hardware.

Redwood can also recommend resellers in California, Kansas, Ohio, Massachusetts and Texas that can provide "local" service.

Questions and Answers

Question: Why do you think many companies will continue to expand their XP4000 Systems?

Answer: Currently XP Systems offer good value. Based on cost/port, XP is currently about 65% less expensive.
Also, XP Systems are more flexible than AMX and have a demonstrated reliability record.

Question: Why do you say that XP4000 Systems are more flexible than AMX systems?

Answer: The AMX system is a "one dimensional" concept based on a server farm mentality which assumes that all large systems have a group of servers in one location and a group of users in another location. Also, AMX does not support multimedia. XP Systems support more complex configurations (we call it "multi-dimensional") which allow users and servers to be distributed throughout the system. XP also supports the "one dimensional" configurations. In addition, XP supports small systems such as a simple system for a blind person who uses a XP4010 to provide multimedia (audio) and Braille pad support via the XP serial capability. XP Systems are also finding use in other diverse applications such as classrooms and for audio-visual staging and technical support for major conferences, trade shows and staging events.

Question: Some Avocent customers are replacing XP4000 with DSR products. Is this a good idea?

Answer: The Avocent sales pitch for DSR typically says: "Specifically designed for IT administrators who need to easily troubleshoot, reboot or even power cycle servers or serial devices in branch offices, avoiding the need for costly on-site service calls." We have one customer who is using low cost SwitchView IP units to manage XP systems located in Washington, Colorado and London from his home/office in Seattle thereby avoiding the high cost of DSR software and software upgrades. Like AMX, DSR systems are typically "one dimensional". On the otherhand, XP systems can be configured to provide redundant paths from the server to the user thus minimizing system downtime as a result of failures. Also, most XP failures can be quickly repaired by simply replacing a card or power supply. DSR failures typically require that the unit be returned to Avocent for replacement or repair. All of the DSR switches contain fans which are much more likely to fail than electronic components. Some of the latest DSR switches have replaced the internal squirrel cage blower with two small fans which are visible from the outside. These redundant fans are a significant improvement from the earlier designs. Also, DSR does not support multimedia.

Question: How do you plan to satisfy hardware needs during the next few years?

Answer: Initially we are planning to build an inventory of several thousand cards and several hundred chases.
Eventually we may introduce some product improvements such as the XPAD (dual XPAC) card.

Question: Approximately what is the size of your current XP4000 inventory?

Answer: We currently have over 100 chases and over 1,000 latest revision cards in stock!

Question: Are there any XP4000 components that you do not currently have in inventory?

Answer: Yes. Recent demand for XPLU and XPRB cards has exceeded our supply.
Another item in short supply is the XP1104. We are making every effort to correct these shortages.

Question: Why are you recommending the Adder AdderLink IP for IP connectivity?

Answer: Our customers who have used both say the Adderlink IP is faster than the SwitchView IP and has better video.
The list price for the AdderLink IP is about $995. The street price is about $800.
Avocent has reduced the price of the Switchview to $795 or a street price of about $600.

Question: What are the advantages of using PS2 to USB adapters to connect USB servers?

Answer: 1. The USB to PS2 adapter allows a XPAC card to connect to a USB server with standard CIFCA cables!
2. Making the conversion at the server allows cables as long as 30 ft to be used to connect the server to the XPAC card.

Question: What is going to be your main techniques for promoting future XP System applications?

Answer: We will use both Google ads and informed Avocent resellers to expand the number of XP System users.

Question: Why do you think that Avocent resellers will promote future sales of XP4000 hardware?

Answer: Current Avocent pricing has created a cutthroat sales environment for AMX and other Avocent products.
In this cutthroat sales environment, resellers that sell less than $700K/yr seldom make more than 5% per sale.
Most resellers would welcome the opportunity to make 20% on a much smaller XP sale that delivers the same capacity.

Question: Why was the XP2216 and the XP1104 only sold for a short period of time?

Answer: Because these components made the XP4000 System more attractive.
Avocent did not want to extend the life of the XP systems and thereby impact sales of the forthcoming AMX system.

Question: What were the main advantages of the XP2216 and the XP1104?

Answer: 1. Three XP2216 units could provide 48 server interfaces in the space required for one XP4040 chassis.
2. The XP1104 provided a small user station that supported up to four KVMs in a manner similar to the AMX system.
3. Cost savings. The XP2216 provided a cost savings of about $100/port.

Question: What were the main disadvantages of the XP2216 and the XP1104?

Answer: 1. The XP2216 could only interface with PC servers.
2. The XP2216 and XP1104 did not support multimedia. Server farms normally do not require multimedia.

Question: Is the Avocent AMX System just the old Apex ViewPoint System in disguise?

Answer: No, it is the Paragon System in drag. Actually AMX was derived from the Apex ViewPoint!
