ANCIENT WORDS: JESUS

 

         Pre- existence of Jesus (Jn. 17:5-24; 1 Pet. 1:20).

                    Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God (Jn. 1:1; Heb. 13:8; Rev. 1:8).

                    Jesus was in existence as the Son of God before the creation (cf. Prov. 8:22-30), in the creation (Col. 1:16-17), in the Old Testament (Dan. 3:25; Jn. 8:56-58), and before Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2). Jesus came as the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8).

         Incarnation of Jesus (Heb. 10:5; 1 Jn. 1:2; “God in the flesh”).

                    The person and nature of Jesus never changed in His birth–only His form or image changed (Phil. 2:5-8).

                    Jesus temporarily emptied Himself not of His divine nature but of His environment of glory (2 Cor. 8:9).

                    Jesus took the “form of a servant” (carpenter) and appeared outwardly in the “likeness of man” (Rom. 8:3; Is. 53:2).

         Virgin birth of Jesus (Mt. 1:18-25; Lk. 1:27-35; Gen. 3:15; Gal. 4:4).

                    Jesus did not inherit the sin nature of Adam (Rom. 5:12-18).

                    Jesus’ birth occurred apart from human work but through the supernatural operation of the Spirit.

         Deity of Jesus (Jn. 5:17-19, 14:8-9; Heb. 1:3, 10-12; “I AM”–Jn. 11:25).

                    The Scriptures gave Jesus the title of God (Jn. 1:1, 20:28; Rom. 9:5; Tit. 2:13). Jesus claimed His equal deity (Jn. 10:30, 14:6-9). Jesus possessed the attributes of God (Mt. 28:20), forgave sins like God (Mk. 2:7), created as God (Jn. 1:3-10; Col. 1:15), judged as God (Jn. 5:22), and received worship as God (Lk. 24:52; Jn. 5:23-29).

                    Fully man (Jn. 1:14; Heb. 2:14-18; 1 Jn. 1:1) and fully God (two natures in one person).

         Sinlessness of Jesus (Heb. 4:15).

                    Jesus lived the perfect life (Acts 10:38) in favor with God and man (Lk. 2:52).

                    Man could find “no fault” in Him (Lk. 23:4).

                    Though tempted (Lk. 4:13), Jesus did not sin and became the holy sacrifice (1 Pet. 1:19).

         Crucifixion of Jesus (1 Pet. 3:18).

                    Jesus died for the sins of others (Jer. 31:30a).

                    Jesus died to pay a penalty (Mt. 20:28).

                    Jesus died to save friends (Jn. 15:13).

                    Jesus died for the ungodly (Rom. 5:6-8).

                    Jesus died at a tremendous price to His Father (Rom. 8:32).

                    Jesus died as a substitute (2 Cor. 5:21).

                    Jesus died to deliver man from this world (Gal. 1:4).

                    Jesus died because He loved (Gal. 2:20).

                    Jesus died to remove the curse of the law (Gal. 3:13).

                    Jesus died to illustrate death to self (Eph. 5:25; 1 Pet. 2:21).

                    Jesus died to destroy death (1 Th. 5:10; Heb. 2:9).

                    Jesus died to purify a people (Tit. 2:14).

                    Jesus died as a perfect sacrifice (Heb. 10:12).

         Burial of Jesus (1 Cor. 15:3-4).

                    The body of Jesus went inside the tomb, but the Spirit of Jesus went to the Father (Mt. 22:32; Acts 2:27).

                    Jesus presented the blood of the atonement in heaven and freed the spirits in prison (Heb. 9:24-26; 1 Pet. 3:18-19).

         Resurrection of Jesus (Rom. 5:10).

                    Jesus rose bodily from the grave (Mt. 28:6-7; Jn. 19:40; Acts 13:37).

                    Jesus appeared openly after the resurrection (Acts 3:15, 10:40; 1 Cor. 15:6).

                    Jesus imparted resurrection power to believers (Acts 4:10; Rom. 6:4-9; Eph. 1:20; Col. 2:12).

                    Jesus rose from the dead as Lord (Rom. 10:9, 14:9).

                    Jesus’ resurrection assures believers of life after death (Jn. 14:19).

         Exaltation of Jesus (Eph. 1:20; 1 Tim. 3:16; Heb. 1:3; Phil. 2:10-11).

                    Jesus ascended (Lk. 24:50-51; Acts 1:9) back into heaven as the “highly exalted” (Acts 2:33, 5:31) Lord of all (Acts 2:36; Rom. 14:9).

                    Jesus now intercedes for the saints (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:25; 1 Jn. 2:1).

                    Heaven, earth, and hell will adore the “name above every name–Jesus.”

         Second coming of Jesus (Jn. 14:3).

                    Jesus promised to return again for His bride, the Church. Jesus will return visibly (Rev. 1:7), suddenly (Mt. 24:44), personally (1 Th. 4:16), literally (Acts 1:11), and victoriously (Lk. 21:28).

                    Jesus will raise the dead in Christ and glorify the bodies of the saved (1 Cor. 15:52) to share in His eternal home (Phil. 3:20-21).
