ANCIENT WORDS: THE HOLY SPIRIT
In the Old Testament
• In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit worked in power , especially on chosen individuals (Gen.1:2; Num. 27:18; Jud. 6:34, 14:6-19, 15:14; 1 Sam.10:6-10, 16:13-14).
• The Old Testament prophets spoke of a time when God would pour out His Spirit upon all His people (Is. 44:3; Ezek. 36:26-27, 37:14; Jl. 2:28-29; Zech. 12:10).
In Jesus
• When Jesus came, the Holy Spirit uniquely resided in Him (Is.11:2, 61:1; Lk. 3:16-22, 4:1-14-18; Jn. 1:32-33, 3:34; Acts 10:38).
• After Jesus’ ascension, He gave the Holy Spirit from the Father to all the church (Lk. 24:49; Jn. 7:37-39, 14:16, 15:26, 16:7; Acts 2:33).
• The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus (Jn.14:16; Acts 16:7; Rom. 8:9; Gal. 4:6; Phil. 1:19; 1 Pet.1:11).
• When believers receive Jesus, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38, 10:44-47; Rom. 5:5, 8:9-14-16; 1 Cor. 6:19, 12:3-13; 2 Cor. 1:22, 5:5; Gal. 3:2-14, 4:6; Eph. 1:13; Heb. 6:4; 1 Jn. 3:24, 4:13; Jude 19).
• The Holy Spirit testifies of and glorifies Jesus (Jn. 15:26, 16:13-14; Acts 5:32, 20:23; Eph. 3:5; 1 Jn. 5:6).
In the Church
• The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture (Mk. 12:36; Acts 1:16; 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21).
• The Holy Spirit dwells in the church (1 Cor. 3:16; Eph. 2:22, 4:3-4).
• The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to the church for ministry (Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Cor. 12:7; 2 Tim. 1:6-14; Heb. 2:4; 1 Pet. 4:10-11).
In Believers
• The Holy Spirit is active (convicts and changes) in salvation (Jn. 3:5-8, 16:8-11; 1 Cor. 6:11; Tit. 3:5; 1 Pet. 1:2-22; Rev. 22:17).
• At the resurrection the Holy Spirit will raise those who died in Christ (Rom. 8:18-23).
• The Holy Spirit leads believers to witness (Lk. 24:49; Acts 1:8, 8:29, 10:19, 13:2; Rom. 9:1).
• The Holy Spirit empowers the Word (Zech. 4:6; Mt. 10:20; Acts 2:4, 4:8-31; Rom. 15:16-19; 1 Cor. 2:4; 1 Th. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:12).
• The Holy Spirit inspires prayer (Rom. 8:26-27; Eph. 6:18; Jude 20).
• The Holy Spirit lives inwardly with believers (Acts 9:31, 13:52, 15:28; Rom.14:17, 15:13; 2 Cor. 13:14; 1 Th. 1:6).
• The Holy Spirit speaks to and guides believers (Lk. 2:25-27; Acts 11:28, 16:6-7; 1 Cor. 2:12-13; 1 Tim. 4:1; 1 Jn. 2:27-28; Rev. 2:7).
• The Holy Spirit sanctifies believers (Rom. 8:13-14; 2 Cor. 3:6-18; Gal. 5:16-25; Eph. 3:16; 2 Th. 2:13).
• The Holy Spirit fills believers for service (Ex. 31:3, 35:31; Lk. 1:41-67; Acts 4:8-31, 6:3-5, 7:55, 9:17, 11:24, 13:9-52; Eph. 5:18).
In a Carnal or Natural Man
• Believers and unbelievers can sin against the Spirit (Jud. 16:19; 1 Sam. 16:14; Ps. 51:11; Mk. 3:29; Acts 5:3, 7:51; Eph. 4:30; 1 Th. 5:19; Heb. 10:29).
• The Holy Spirit can reside with fullness in believers who will ask, believe, and receive (Lk. 11:13; Jn. 7:37-39, 20:22).
