REMARKABLE CONVERSION
DANIEL 4:1-37
Daniel told a remarkable conversion story of the most unlikely man. Without a doubt, Daniel prayed long and hard for this man.
Mk. 10:26-27 [ESV]. And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God."
I. Introduction (4:1-3)
Nebuchadnezzar wrote a letter that began and ended with thanksgiving to God (like a Psalm).
Ps. 145:13. Thy kingdom [is] an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion [endureth] throughout all generations.
In the letter Nebuchadnezzar told how he came to honor the God who humbled him.
A. Official (1)
B. Open (2)
This is a personal testimony (“I Nebuchadnezzar”– Dan. 4:4, 37).
C. Opposite (3)
God elevated Nebuchadnezzar to give an open and unashamed confession before men.
Ps. 66:16 [ESV]. Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
II. Image (4:4-18)
A. Terror (4-9)
1. Sorcerers
2. Spirit-filled (Dan. 4:8-9, 18, 5:11-14)
1 Cor. 2:12 [ESV]. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
B. Tree (10-18)
Mk. 4:32 [ESV]. yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.
1. Flourish
2. Fell
Prov. 16:18. Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
III. Interpretation (4:19-27)
A. Prosperity (19-22)
The dream came to Nebuchadnezzar at a time when the king walked at ease in Zion.
Dt. 8:17 [ESV]. Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.'
B. Plummet (23-25)
Daniel described a disease called lycanthropy.
Ps. 73:22. So foolish [was] I, and ignorant: I was [as] a beast before thee.
C. Provision (26-27)
IV. Insanity (4:28-37)
The time of Nebuchadnezzar’s insanity shifted to the third person. Nebuchadnezzar walked about Babylon in admiration of all the buildings completed.
Edward
J. Young commented, “The discovery of the cuneiform inscriptions has remarkably
confirmed the accuracy of this vs. From these we learn that Neb. was primarily,
not a warrior, but a builder. In the famous East India House Inscription, for
example, Neb. relates how he renovated the two temples of Marduk in Babylon, and
of Nebo in Borsippa. He then declares how he restored fifteen other temples in
Babylon and completed the two great walls of the city, adding a large rampart.
Then he rebuilt the palace of Nabopolassar and in only fifteen days constructed
a palace, with which was connected the famous hanging-gardens.”
According
to Herodotus, each side of the city wall went about 14 miles long, making a
circuit of nearly 56 miles, and an area of nearly 196 square miles. Around the
city, Herodotus described a deep moat full of water. Babylon's walls rose 311
feet high and spanned 87 feet in thickness.
A. Pride (28-30)
At the height of power and rule Nebuchadnezzar fell to the original sin (Is. 14:12-14; Ezek. 28:17; 1 Jn. 2:16). Living outside of God’s rule will lead to self-deception.
Lk. 12:20 [ESV]. But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?'
B. Punishment (31-33)
Nebuchadnezzar ignored God’s pleadings.
Prov. 29:1 [CEV]. If you keep being stubborn after many warnings, you will suddenly discover you have gone too far.
C. Praise (34-37)
1. Repentance (Acts 26:20)
2. Restoration
This remarkable conversion illustrated many lessons learned about God’s dealings with man (Dan. 4:17, 25, 32).
• Conversion is for the glory of God.
• Self-sufficiency turns the mind from God.
• God speaks in many ways to draw people to Himself.
• Satan lies about the nature of the sin problem.
• Man exhausts all other solutions before turning to God.
• God sends a Spirit-filled messenger to deliver His answer.
• True prophets of God carry a “burden.”
• God is sovereign–He builds up and He breaks down.
• Pride is blinded to the source of all blessings.
• Divine discipline can come swiftly and severely.
• God is longsuffering in His dealings with the disobedient.
• God gives an offer of repentance.
• Even after discipline, God leaves a remnant of grace.
• God keeps the heavy hand of conviction on until man looks up.
• Unbelief is insanity.
• No peace comes to the wicked.
• God does not have pleasure in the death of the wicked.
• God is not willing that any perish.
• Humility before God is the secret of fulfillment.
Prov. 15:33 [HCSB]. The fear of the LORD is wisdom's instruction, and humility comes before honor.
Jas. 4:6 [ESV]. But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
Isaac Watts wrote, “When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.”
NIV
1. King Nebuchadnezzar, To the peoples (Dan. 4:1-35), nations and men of every language (Dan. 3:4-7-29, 4:1, 5:19, 6:25, 7:14), who live in all the world (Dan. 2:35-39, 4:1-11-20-35, 6:25, 7:23): May you prosper greatly (Dan. 4:1, 6:25)!
2. It is my pleasure (Dan. 4:2-27, 6:1) to tell (Dan. 2:4-6-7-9-10-11-16-24-27, 4:2, 5:7-12-15) you about the miraculous signs (Dan. 4:2-3, 6:27) and wonders (Dan. 4:2-3, 6:27) that the Most High God (Dan. 3:26, 4:2-17-24-25-32-34, 5:18-21, 7:25) has performed (Dan. 4:2-35) for me.
3. How great are his signs (Dan. 4:2-3, 6:27), how mighty his wonders (Dan. 4:2-3, 6:27)! His kingdom (Dan. 2:44, 4:3-17-25-32-34, 7:14) is an eternal kingdom (Dan. 2:20-44, 4:3-34, 6:26, 7:14-18-27); his dominion (Dan. 4:3-22-34, 6:26, 7:6-12-14-26-27) endures from generation to generation (Dan. 4:3-34).
4. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace (Dan. 4:4-29, 5:2-3-5, 6:18), contented and prosperous.
5. I had a dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1) that made me afraid (Dan. 2:31, 4:5, 5:19, 6:26, 7:7-19). As I was lying in my bed (Dan. 2:28-29, 4:5-10-13, 7:1), the images and visions (Dan. 2:19-28, 4:5-9-10-13, 7:1-2-7-13-15-20) that passed through my mind (Dan. 2:28, 4:5-10-13, 7:1-15) terrified (Dan. 2:31, 4:5, 5:19, 6:26, 7:7-19) me.
6. So I commanded (Dan. 3:10-29, 4:6, 6:26) that all the wise (Dan. 2:12-13-14-18-21-24-27-48, 4:6-18, 5:7-8-15) men of Babylon (Dan. 2:12-14-18-24-48-49, 3:1-12-30, 4:6-29-30, 5:7, 7:1) be brought before me to (Dan. 4:6-7-9-17-18-25-26-32) interpret (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16) the dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1) for me.
7. When the magicians (Dan. 2:10-27, 4:7-9, 5:11), enchanters (Dan. 2:10-27, 4:7, 5:7-11-15), astrologers (Dan. 2:5-10, 3:8, 4:7, 5:7-11-30) and diviners (Dan. 2:27-34-45, 4:7, 5:7-11) came, I told them the dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1), but they could not (Dan. 4:6-7-9-17-18-25-26-32) interpret (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16) it for me.
8. Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1). (He is called Belteshazzar, after the name of my god (Dan. 2:11-47, 3:12-14–18, 4:8-9-18, 5:4-11-14-23), and the spirit (Dan. 4:8-9-18, 5:11-12-14, 6:3) of the holy gods is in him.)
9. I said, "Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians (Dan. 2:10-27, 4:7-9, 5:11), I know (Dan. 4:6-7-9-17-18-25-26-32) that the spirit (Dan. 4:8-9-18, 5:11-12-14, 6:3) of the holy gods (Dan. 2:11-47, 3:12-14–18, 4:8-9-18, 5:4-11-14-23) is in you, and no mystery (Dan. 2:18-19-27-28-29-30-47, 4:9) is too difficult for you. Here is my dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1); interpret (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16) it for me.
10. These are the visions (Dan. 2:19-28, 4:5-9-10-13, 7:1-2-7-13-15-20) I saw while lying in my bed (Dan. 2:28-29, 4:5-10-13, 7:1): I looked, and there before me stood a tree (Dan. 4:10-11-14-20-23-26) in the middle of the land. Its height (Dan. 3:1, 4:10-11-20) was enormous.
11. The tree (Dan. 4:10-11-14-20-23-26) grew (Dan. 4:11-20-22-33) large and strong (Dan. 4:11-20-22, 5:20, 6:7) and its top (Dan. 3:1, 4:10-11-20) touched (Dan. 4:11-20-22-24-28) the sky (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37); it was visible (Dan. 4:11-20) to the ends (Dan. 4:11-22) of the earth (Dan. 2:35-39, 4:1-11-20-35, 6:25, 7:23).
12. Its leaves (Dan. 4:12-14-21) were beautiful (Dan. 4:12-21), its fruit (Dan. 4:12-14-21) abundant, and on it was food (Dan. 4:12-21) for all. Under it the beasts (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-14-15-16-21-23-25-32, 5:21) of the field (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-15-21-23-25-32) found shelter, and the birds (Dan. 4:12-14-21-33) of the air (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37) lived in its branches (Dan. 4:12-14-21); from it every creature was fed.
13. "In the visions (Dan. 2:19-28, 4:5-9-10-13, 7:1-2-7-13-15-20) I saw while lying in my bed (Dan. 2:28-29, 4:5-10-13, 7:1), I looked, and there before me was a messenger (Dan. 4:13-17-23), a holy (Dan. 4:8-9-13-17-18-23, 5:11, 7:18-21-22-25-27) one, coming down (Dan. 4:13-21) from heaven (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37).
14. He called in a loud voice (Dan. 3:4, 4:14, 5:7): `Cut down (Dan. 4:14-23) the tree (Dan. 4:10-11-14-20-23-26) and trim off its branches (Dan. 4:12-14-21); strip off its leaves (Dan. 4:12-14-21) and scatter its fruit (Dan. 4:12-14-21). Let the animals (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-14-15-16-21-23-25-32, 5:21) flee from under it and the birds (Dan. 4:12-14-21-33) from its branches (Dan. 4:12-14-21).
15. But let the stump (Dan. 4:15-23-26) and its roots (Dan. 4:15-23-26), bound (Dan. 4:15-23) with iron (Dan. 2:33-34-35-40-41-42-43-45, 4:15-23, 5:4-23, 7:7-19) and bronze (Dan. 2:32-35-39-45, 4:15-23, 5:4-23, 7:19), remain (Dan. 4:15-23-26) in the ground, in the grass (Dan. 4:15-23) of the field (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-15-21-23-25-32). " `Let him be drenched (Dan. 4:15-23-25-33, 5:21) with the dew (Dan. 4:15-23-25-33, 5:21) of heaven (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37), and let him live (Dan. 5:15-23) with the animals (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-14-15-16-21-23-25-32, 5:21) among the plants (Dan. 4:15-25-32-33, 5:21) of the earth.
16. Let his mind (Dan. 2:30, 4:16, 5:20-21-22, 7:4) be changed (Ezra 6:11-12; Dan. 2:9-21, 3:19-27-28, 4:16, 5:6-9-10, 6:8-15-17, 7:3-7-19-23-24-25-28) from that of a man (Dan. 4:16-17-25-32-33) and let him be given the mind of an animal (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-14-15-16-21-23-25-32, 5:21), till seven (Dan. 3:19, 4:16-23-25-32) times (Dan. 2:8-9-21, 3:5-15, 4:16-23-25-32, 7:12-25) pass by (Dan. 4:16-23-25-32) for him.
17. " `The decision (Dan. 3:16, 4:17) is announced (Dan. 4:17-24) by messengers (Dan. 4:13-17-23), the holy (Dan. 4:8-9-13-17-18-23, 5:11, 7:18-21-22-25-27) ones declare the verdict, so that the living (Dan. 2:30, 4:17-34, 6:20-26, 7:12) may know (Dan. 4:6-7-9-17-18-25-26-32) that the Most High (Dan. 3:26, 4:17-24-25-32-34, 5:18-21, 7:18-22-25-27) is sovereign (Dan. 4:17-25-26-32, 5:21-29) over the kingdoms (Dan. 2:44, 4:3-17-25-32-34, 7:14) of men (Dan. 4:16-17-25-32-33) and gives (Dan. 4:17-25-32) them to anyone (Dan. 4:17-25-32, 5:21) he wishes (Dan. 4:17-25-32-35, 5:21) and sets (Dan. 2:21-31-39-44, 3:1-2-3-5-7-12-14-18-24-27, 4:17, 5:11-21, 6:1-3-7-8-15-19, 7:4-5-10-16-17-24) over them the lowliest of men.'
18. "This is the dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1) that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16), for none of the wise (Dan. 2:12-13-14-18-21-24-27-48, 4:6-18, 5:7-8-15) men in my kingdom can (Dan. 4:6-7-9-17-18-25-26-32) interpret (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16) it for me. But you can, because the spirit (Dan. 4:8-9-18, 5:11-12-14, 6:3) of the holy (Dan. 4:8-9-13-17-18-23, 5:11, 7:18-21-22-25-27) gods (Dan. 2:11-47, 3:12-14–18, 4:8-9-18, 5:4-11-14-23) is in you."
19. Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time (Dan. 3:6-15, 4:19-33, 5:5), and his thoughts (Dan. 2:29-30, 4:19, 5:6-10, 7:28) terrified (Dan. 4:5-19, 5:6-9-10, 7:15-28) him. So the king said, "Belteshazzar, do not let the dream (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-26-28-36-45, 4:5-6-7-8-9-18-19, 5:12, 7:1) or its meaning alarm you." Belteshazzar answered, "My lord (Dan. 4:19-24), if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning (Dan. 2:4-5-6-7-9-16-24-25-26-30-36-45, 4:6-7-9-18-19-24, 5:7-8-12-15-16-17-26, 7:16) to your adversaries!
20. The tree (Dan. 4:10-11-14-20-23-26) you saw, which grew (Dan. 4:11-20-22-33) large (Dan. 3:1, 4:10-11-20) and strong (Dan. 4:11-20-22, 5:20, 6:7), with its top touching (Dan. 4:11-20-22-24-28) the sky (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37), visible (Dan. 4:11-20) to the whole earth (Dan. 2:35-39, 4:1-11-20-35, 6:25, 7:23),
21. with beautiful (Dan. 4:12-21) leaves (Dan. 4:12-14-21) and abundant fruit (Dan. 4:12-14-21), providing food (Dan. 4:12-21) for all, giving shelter (Dan. 4:1-12-21-35) to the beasts (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-14-15-16-21-23-25-32, 5:21) of the field (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-15-21-23-25-32), and having nesting places in its branches (Dan. 4:12-14-21) for the birds (Dan. 4:12-14-21-33) of the air (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37)--
22. you, O king, are that tree! You have become great and strong (Dan. 4:11-20-22, 5:20, 6:7); your greatness (Dan. 4:22-36, 5:18-19-27) has grown (Dan. 4:11-20-22-33) until it reaches (Dan. 4:11-20-22-24-28) the sky (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37), and your dominion (Dan. 4:3-22-34, 6:26, 7:6-12-14-26-27) extends to distant parts of the earth (Dan. 4:11-22).
23. "You, O king, saw a messenger (Dan. 4:13-17-23), a holy (Dan. 4:8-9-13-17-18-23, 5:11, 7:18-21-22-25-27) one, coming down (Dan. 4:13-21) from heaven (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37) and saying, `Cut down (Dan. 4:14-23) the tree (Dan. 4:10-11-14-20-23-26) and destroy (Dan. 2:44, 4:23, 6:22-26, 7:14) it, but leave (Dan. 4:15-23-26) the stump (Dan. 4:15-23-26), bound (Dan. 4:15-23) with iron (Dan. 2:33-34-35-40-41-42-43-45, 4:15-23, 5:4-23, 7:7-19) and bronze (Dan. 2:32-35-39-45, 4:15-23, 5:4-23, 7:19), in the grass (Dan. 4:15-23) of the field (Dan. 2:38, 4:12-15-21-23-25-32), while its roots (Dan. 4:15-23-26) remain in the ground. Then I praised (Dan. 2:19-20, 3:28, 4:34, 6:10) (Dan. 2:23, 4:34-37) the Most High (Dan. 3:26, 4:17-24-25-32-34, 5:18-21, 7:18-22-25-27); I honored (Dan. 2:23, 4:34-37) and glorified (Dan. 4:34-37) him who lives (Dan. 2:30, 4:17-34, 6:20-26, 7:12) forever. No one can hold back (Dan. 2:34-35, 4:35) his hand or say to him: "What have you done?"
36. At the same time (Dan. 2:16-21, 3:7-8, 4:36, 6:10-13, 7:12-22) that my sanity (Dan. 2:21, 4:34-36, 5:12) was restored (Dan. 4:34-36), my honor (Dan. 4:30-36, 5:18) (Dan. 2:31, 3:22, 4:36, 5:12-14, 6:3, 7:7-19) and splendor (Dan. 2:31, 4:36, 5:6-9-10, 7:28) were returned to me for the glory (Dan. 2:6-37, 4:30-36, 5:18-20, 7:14) of my kingdom (Dan. 4:3-17-18-25-26-29-30-31-32-34-36). My advisers (Dan. 3:24-27, 4:36, 6:7) and nobles (Dan. 4:36, 5:1-2-3-9-10-23, 6:17) sought (Dan. 2:13, 4:36) me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater (Dan. 4:22-36, 5:18-19-27) than before.
37. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise (Dan. 2:23, 4:34-37) and exalt (Dan. 2:23, 4:34-37) and glorify (Dan. 4:34-37) the King of heaven (Dan. 4:11-12-13-15-20-21-22-23-25-26-31-33-34-35-37), because everything he does is right (Dan. 2:47, 4:37) and all his ways are just (Dan. 4:37, 7:10-22-26). And those who walk (Dan. 3:25, 4:29-37) in pride he is able to humble (Dan. 4:37, 5:19-22, 7:24).
