JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM

DANIEL 11:1-45

Daniel chapter 11 contains an exact prophecy given to Daniel at the end of the seventy-year captivity to outline the future of Jerusalem. From the wars in the time of Daniel until the last war at the end of time, Jerusalem will be at the center of the conflict (Lk. 21:24). In the final conflict God will purify His people and punish the enemies of the righteous.

Sadly, the story of history is the story of wars.

Mt. 24:6 [ESV]. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

Douglas MacArthur warned, “If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door.” Endnote

John F. Kennedy said, “Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.”

Jas. 4:1 [HCSB]. What is the source of the wars and the fights among you? Don't they come from the cravings that are at war within you?

This vision given to Daniel contains the sources of war: satan, power, money, ambition, lies, pride, anger, violence, contempt, deceit, malice, disloyalty, evil, jealousy, shamelessness, flattery, and self-exaltation. The final war will precede the second coming of Christ.

  I. Conflicts after Alexander (11:1-20)

Keil described this section (not exhaustive) as the “period from the division of the monarchy of Alexander among his generals to the commencement of the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes in the year 175 B.C., during which there reigned seven Syrian and six Egyptian kings. . . .” Endnote

 II. Comparison with Anti-christ (11:21-35)

William H. Stephens explained, “Old Testament prophecy often has more than one application and fulfillment. Jesus Himself demonstrated this double application of prophecy when He referred to the abomination of desolation as a future event even though the prophecy was fulfilled by Antiochus Epiphanes (Mt. 24:15).” Endnote

Keil explained, “Thus vers. 40-45 do not apply to Antiochus Epiphanes, but with most ancient interpreters, they refer only to the final enemy of the people of God, the Anti-christ.” Endnote

      A. Personification

          1. Spirit of Anti-christ (1 Jn. 2:18)

          2. Satanic trinity (Rev. 13:3-6, 11)

      B. Imitation

          1. False Christ (Mt. 24:5)

          2. Against Christ (Rev. 6:2)

      C. Organization

          1. Empirical (Rev. 17:9-14)

          2. Ecclesiastical (Rev. 13:11-15)

          3. Economical (Rev. 13:16-18)

In the last world war, the Italians and Germans seemed the most enlightened of all nations, but they looked at their rulers as gods. Endnote Again, the world will worship a man before Christ comes.

      D. Identification (Satan always keeps a man ready.)

          1. Historically (Caligula, Nero, Pope, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini)

          2. Biblically (2 Th. 2:2-13–man of sin, son of perdition, beast)

      E. Duration

          1. Tribulation period (2 Th. 2:7)

          2. Three and a half years (Dan. 7:25, 9:27)

III. Campaign of Armageddon (11:36-45)

Zech. 12:9 [ESV]. And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Zech. 14:3-4 [ESV]. Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.

 4. On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.

Rev. 16:16 [ESV]. And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Pentecost noted that the “campaign that extends over the last half of the tribulation period.” Endnote The campaign of Armageddon will extend the length of Israel (Ezek. 38:9–“cover the land;” Rev. 14:20–“200 miles”).

      A. Nations in the battle (alignment–Mt. 24:7)

          1. West–Dan. 7:1-8 (confederacy of the ancient Roman empire)

          2. South–Dan. 11:40 (Egypt)

          3. East–Rev. 9:13-16, 16:12

          4. North–Ezek. 38-39

In 1883 Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown listed objections to a literal interpretation of Ezekiel 38-39.

The nations congregated from places too distant to Israel.

The number of dead was too great. Endnote

More than one hundred years later, these objections pose no problem to those living in the age of technological warfare.

Keil and Delitzsch stated it will be a time when the old enemies of Israel have passed away. Endnote At the end time, new enemies will arise.

              a. Gog–Magog (Gen. 10:2–ancient Scythians Endnote in N.E. Armenia Endnote )

              b. Meshech (Greek–Moscoi)

              c. Tubal (Cappadocia Endnote province of Tobolsk)

              d. Prince (Roash; Russians; Endnote LXX–RwV)

      B. Time of the battle (Ezek. 38:8latter years; Messianic time Endnote )

          1. Return of Israel (regathered and repopulated Endnote Ezek. 38:12)

          2. Dwelling in safety (Ezek. 38:11; Dan. 9:27, 11:24)

The first three and a half years of the tribulation period will begin peacefully. Then, Satan will inspire war against Israel Endnote (Ezek. 38:10; Rev. 16:14). This invasion will mark the beginning of the campaign. Endnote

      C. Place of the battle (Rev. 16:13-16; Ezek. 38:8–mountains of Israel)

          1. Midst of the land–center of the nations (Ezek. 5:5)

          2. Place of wealth (Ezek. 38:12)

Megiddo (west of the Jordan River, ten miles south of Nazareth, fifteen miles inland from the Mediterranean) rests on the plain of Esdraelon (14 x 20 miles). Napoleon reportedly called this plain “an ideal battleground.” Endnote

      D. Result of the battle

          1. Remnant of Israel (Rom. 11:5)

          2. Return of Christ (Mt. 24:22; Rev. 19:11)

Anti-christ will turn even against Christ (Ps. 2:2), and then Christ will return as King.

NIV

 1. And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) to support (Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32) and protect (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39) him.)

 2. "Now then, I tell (Dan. 9:23, 10:21, 11:2) you the truth (Dan. 8:12-26, 9:13, 10:1-21, 11:2): Three more kings (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) will appear (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) in Persia (Dan. 10:1-13-20, 11:2; 2 Chr. 36:20; Ezra 1:1, 7:1), and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. When he has gained power by his wealth, he will stir up (Dan. 11:2-25) everyone against the kingdom (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of Greece (Dan. 8:21, 10:20, 11:2).

 3. Then a mighty king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) will appear (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31), who will rule (Dan. 11:3-4-5-39-43) with great power (Dan. 11:3-5) and do as he pleases (Dan. 8:4, 11:3-16-36).

 4. After he has appeared (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31), his empire (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) will be broken up (Dan. 8:7-8-22-25, 11:4-20-22-26) and parceled out (Ezek. 37:22) toward the four winds (Ezek. 37:9; Dan. 8:8, 11:4) of heaven. It will not go to his descendants (Dan. 8:19-23, 10:14, 11:4, 12:8), nor will it have the power (Job 41:33) he exercised (Dan. 11:3-4-5-39-43), because his empire will be uprooted (2 Chr. 7:20; Jer. 1:10; Amos 9:15) and given to others.

 5. "The king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will become strong (grow firm, strong; Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32), but one of his commanders (Dan. 8:11-25, 9:6-8, 10:13-20-21, 11:5, 12:1) will become even stronger than he and will rule (Dan. 11:3-4-5-39-43) his own kingdom (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) with great power (Dan. 11:3-5).

 6. After (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9) some years, they will become allies (Gen. 14:3; Dan. 11:6-23). The daughter of the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will go to the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) to make an alliance (Ps. 9:8), but she will not retain her power (Dan. 8:6-7-22-24, 10:8-16-17, 11:6-15-25), and he and his power (Dan. 11:6-15-22-31) will not last. In those days she will be handed over, together with her royal escort and her father and the one who supported (Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32) her.

 7. "One from her family line (Is. 11:1) will arise (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) to take her place (Dan. 11:7-20-21-38). He will attack (Dan. 11:7-10-13-25-26) the forces of the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) and enter his fortress (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39); he will fight against them and be victorious (Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32).

 8. He will also seize (Neh. 1:3; Dan. 11:8-33) their gods, their metal images (2 Chr. 36:10; Hos. 13:15) and their valuable (Dan. 9:23, 10:3-11-19, 11:8-37-38-43; 1 Sam. 9:20; Hag. 2:7) articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt. For some years he will leave the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) alone.

 9. Then the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) will invade the realm of the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) but will retreat (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) to his own country.

 10. His sons will prepare for war (Prov. 15:18, 29:22; Dan. 11:10-25) and assemble (Is. 13:4) a great (Dan. 11:10-11-13) army (Dan. 11:7-10-13-25-26), which will sweep on like an irresistible flood (Ps. 124:4; S. S. 8:7; Dan. 11:10-22-26-40) and carry (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) the battle as far as his fortress (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39).

 11. "Then the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will march out (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) in a rage (Dan. 8:7, 11:11) and fight (Dan. 10:20, 11:11) against the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44), who will raise a large (Dan. 11:10-11-12-13) army (Dan. 11:10-11-13), but it will be defeated (Dan. 1:2, 11:11).

 12. When the army (Dan. 11:10-11-12-13) is carried off (Dan. 11:12-14), the king of the South will be filled with pride (Dt. 8:14; Is. 14:13; Ezek. 31:10) and will slaughter (Dan. 8:10-17, 9:18-20, 10:7, 11:12-19-26) many thousands, yet he will not remain triumphant (Jud. 6:2; Ps. 9:19).

 13. For the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) will muster (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) another army (Dan. 11:10-11-13), larger (Dan. 11:10-11-12-13) than the first; and after (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9) several years, he will advance (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) with a huge army (Dan. 11:7-10-13-25-26) fully equipped (Gen. 14:11; Dan. 11:13-24-28).

 14. "In those times many will rise (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) against the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40). The violent (Is. 35:9; Jer. 7:11) men among your own people will rebel (Dan. 11:12-14) in fulfillment of the vision (Dan. 8:1-2-13-15-26, 9:21-23-24, 10:14, 11:14), but without success (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41).

 15. Then the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) will come and build up siege ramps (2 Sam. 20:15; 2 Kg. 19:32; Jer. 6:6) and will capture (Dan. 11:15-18) a fortified city (Jos. 10:20). The forces (Dan. 11:6-15-22-31) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will be powerless to resist; even their best troops will not have the strength (Dan. 8:6-7-22-24, 10:8-16-17, 11:6-15-25) to stand (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31).

 16. The invader will do as he pleases (Dan. 8:4, 11:3-16-36); no one will be able to stand (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) against him. He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land (Dan. 8:9, 11:16-41-45) and will have the power to destroy it (completion, destruction, annihilation Endnote ; Dan. 9:27, 11:16; Gen. 18:21; Is. 10:23, 28:22; Jer. 4:27, 46:28; Ezek. 20:17; Nah. 1:8; Zeph. 1:18).

 17. He will determine (Dan. 11:17-18) to come with the might (Est. 10:2) of his entire kingdom and will make an alliance with the king of the South. And he will give him a daughter in marriage (Gen. 29:28; 1 Sam. 18:27) in order to overthrow (Dan. 8:24-25, 9:26, 11:17) the kingdom, but his plans will not succeed or help him.

 18. Then he will turn (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) his attention (Dan. 11:17-18) to the coastlands (Is. 11:11) and will take (Dan. 11:15-18) many of them, but a commander (Jud. 11:6) will put an end (cease, desist, rest Endnote ; Dan. 9:27, 11:18; Lev. 26:35; 2 Chr. 36:21; Hos. 2:11) to his insolence (Jos. 5:9; Neh. 4:4; Dan. 9:16, 11:18, 12:2) and will turn (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) his insolence back upon him.

 19. After this, he will turn back (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) toward the fortresses (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39) of his own country but will stumble (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41) and fall (Dan. 8:10-17, 9:18-20, 10:7, 11:12-19-26), to be seen no more.

 20. "His successor (Dan. 11:7-20-21-38) will send out a tax collector (Ex. 3:7) to maintain the royal splendor. In a few years, however, he will be destroyed (Dan. 8:7-8-22-25, 11:4-20-22-26), yet not in anger (Dan. 9:16, 11:20) or in battle (Dan. 9:26, 11:20-25).

 21. "He will be succeeded (Dan. 11:7-20-21-38) by a contemptible (Gen. 25:34; 1 Sam. 17:42) person who has not been given the honor (1 Chr. 29:25) of royalty. He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure (Dan. 8:25, 11:21-24), and he will seize (grow firm, strong; Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:5-21) (Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32) it through intrigue (Ps. 35:6; Jer. 23:12; Dan. 11:21-34).

 22. Then an overwhelming (Ps. 124:4; S. S. 8:7; Dan. 11:10-22-26-40) army (Dan. 11:6-15-22-31) will be swept away before him; both it and a prince (Dan. 9:22, 11:22; Ps. 76:12) of the covenant (Dan. 9:4-27, 11:22-28-30-32) will be destroyed (Dan. 8:7-8-22-25, 11:4-20-22-26).

 23. After coming to an agreement (Gen. 14:3; Dan. 11:6-23) with him, he will act deceitfully (Dan. 8:25, 11:23), and with only a few people (Dan. 8:22, 11:23, 12:1) he will rise to power (Dan. 8:8-24, 11:23).

 24. When the richest (Gen. 27:28; Ps. 78:31) provinces (Neh. 1:3; Est. 1:1) feel secure (Dan. 8:25, 11:21-24), he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute (Ps. 68:30) plunder (Ezra 9:7; Dan. 11:24-33), loot (Jos. 7:21; 1 Sam. 15:21; Ezek. 38:12) and wealth (Gen. 14:11; Dan. 11:13-24-28) among his followers. He will plot (Dan. 11:24-25) the overthrow (Gen. 6:5; Prov. 6:18, 16:3; Is. 55:7-8; Dan. 11:24-25) of fortresses (Num. 13:19; Dan. 11:15-24-39)--but only for a time.

 25. "With a large army (2 Kg. 7:6; Ezek. 17:17; Dan. 11:13-25) he will stir up (Dan. 11:2-25) his strength (Dan. 8:6-7-22-24, 10:8-16-17, 11:6-15-25) and courage (Dan. 11:12-25-27-28) against the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40). The king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will wage (Prov. 15:18, 29:22; Dan. 11:10-25) war (Dan. 9:26, 11:20-25) with a large and very powerful (Dan. 8:24, 11:25) army (Dan. 11:7-10-13-25-26), but he will not be able to stand (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) because of the plots (Dan. 11:24-25) devised (Gen. 6:5; Prov. 6:18, 16:3; Is. 55:7-8; Dan. 11:24-25) against him.

 26. Those who eat from the king's provisions (Dan. 1:5-8-13-15-16) will try to destroy (Dan. 8:7-8-22-25, 11:4-20-22-26) him; his army (Dan. 11:7-10-13-25-26) will be swept (Ps. 124:4; S. S. 8:7; Dan. 11:10-22-26-40) away, and many will fall (Dan. 8:10-17, 9:18-20, 10:7, 11:12-19-26) in battle (1 Sam. 17:52; 2 Sam. 1:25).

 27. The two kings (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40), with their hearts (Dan. 11:12-25-27-28) bent on evil (Dan. 9:12-13-14, 11:27), will sit at the same table (2 Sam. 9:11) and lie (Jud. 16:30; Prov. 14:5; Ezek. 13:9) to each other, but to no avail (Dan. 8:12-24-25, 11:27-36), because an end (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9) will still come at the appointed (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7) time (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7).

 28. The king of the North will return (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) to his own country with great wealth (Gen. 14:11; Dan. 11:13-24-28), but his heart (Dan. 11:12-25-27-28) will be set against the holy (Dan. 8:13-14, 9:16-20-24-26, 11:28-30-45, 12:7) covenant (Dan. 9:4-27, 11:22-28-30-32). He will take action against it and then return (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) to his own country.

 29. "At the appointed (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7) time (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7) he will invade (Dan. 9:13-16-25, 10:20, 11:9-10-13-18-19-28-29-30) the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before (Hag. 2:9).

 30. Ships (Num. 24:24) of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart (Ezek. 13:22). Then he will turn back and vent his fury (Prov. 25:23) against the holy (Dan. 8:13-14, 9:16-20–24-26, 11;28-30-45, 12:7) covenant (Dan. 9:4-27, 11:22-28-30-32). He will return and show favor (Dan. 1:4-17, 8:5-16-17-23-27, 9:2-22-23, 10:1-11-12-14, 11:30-33-37, 12:8-10) to those who forsake the holy (Dan. 8:13-14, 9:16-20-24-26, 11:28-30-45, 12:7) covenant (Dan. 9:4-27, 11:22-28-30-32).

 31. "His armed forces (Dan. 11:6-15-22-31) will rise (Dan. 11:1-2-3-4-6-7-8-11-13-14-15-16-17-20-21-25-31) up to desecrate (Num. 18:32; Ezek. 7:22) the temple (Dan. 8:11, 9:17, 11:31) fortress (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39) and will abolish (Dan. 9:5-11, 11:31, 12:11) the daily sacrifice (Dan. 8:11-12-13, 11:31, 12:11). Then they will set up the abomination (detested thing Endnote ; Dan. 9:27, 11:31, 12:11; 2 Kg. 23:13-24; Jer. 32:34; Ezek. 5:11, 37:23) that causes desolation (Dan. 8:13-27, 9:18-26-27, 11:31, 12:11; Lev. 26:31-33-35; 1 Kg. 9:8; 2 Chr. 36:21; Ps. 69:25; Is. 54:3, 61:4; Ezek. 36:35; Amos 9:14).

 32. With flattery he will corrupt (Is. 24:5; Jer. 3:1) those who have violated (Neh. 9:33; Dan. 9:5-15, 11:32, 12:10; wicked Endnote ) the covenant (Dan. 9:4-27, 11:22-28-30-32), but the people who know (Dan. 2:3, 8:19, 9:25, 10:20, 11:32-38) their God will firmly (Dan. 10:18-19-21, 11:1-5-6-7-21-32) resist him.

 33. "Those who are wise (Dan. 1:4-17, 9:13-22-25, 11:33-35, 12:3-10) will instruct (Dan. 1:4-17, 8:5-16-17-23-27, 9:2-22-23, 10:1-11-12-14, 11:30-33-37, 12:8-10) many, though for a time they will fall (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41) by the sword or be burned or captured (Neh. 1:3; Dan. 11:8-33) or plundered (Ezra 9:7; Dan. 11:24-33).

 34. When they fall (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41), they will receive a little help (1 Sam. 7:12; Is. 41:10; Dan. 10:13, 11:34, 11:45), and many who are not sincere (Ps. 35:6; Jer. 23:12; Dan. 11:21-34) will join (Is. 14:1) them.

 35. Some of the wise (Dan. 1:4-17, 9:13-22-25, 11:33-35, 12:3-10) will stumble (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41), so that they may be refined (Ps. 26:2, 66:10; Dan. 11:35, 12:10; Mal. 3:2-3), purified (2 Sam. 22:27; Ps. 18:26; Is. 52:11; Dan. 11:35, 12:10) and made spotless (Ps. 51:7; Is. 1:18; Dan. 11:35, 12:10) until the time of the end (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9), for it will still come at the appointed (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7) time (Dan. 8:19, 11:27-29-35, 12:7).

 36. "The king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) will do as he pleases (Dan. 8:4, 11:3-16-36). He will exalt (Dan. 11:12-36, 12:7; Prov. 6:17; Is. 2:12, 14:13) and magnify (Dan. 8:4-8-9-10-11-25, 11:36-37; Zeph. 2:10) himself above every god and will say unheard-of (Gen. 18:14; Jos. 3:5; Jud. 6:13; Dan. 8:24, 11:36) things against the God of gods (Dt. 10:17; Ps. 136:2; Dan. 2:47, 11:36). He will be successful (Dan. 8:12-24-25, 11:27-36) until the time of wrath (Dan. 8:19, 11:36) is completed (Dan. 11:36, 12:7), for what has been determined (cut, sharpen, decide Endnote ; Dan. 9:26, 11:36; 1 Kg. 20:40; Job 14:5; Is. 28:22) must take place.

 37. He will show no regard (Dan. 1:4-17, 8:5-16-17-23-27, 9:2-22-23, 10:1-11-12-14, 11:30-33-37, 12:8-10) for the gods of his fathers (Ex. 3:13; 2 Kg. 21:22; 2 Chr. 36:15; Ezra 10:11) or for the one desired (Dan. 9:23, 10:3-11-19, 11:8-37-38-43; 1 Sam. 9:20; Hag. 2:7) by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt (Dan. 8:4-8-9-10-11-25, 11:36-37; Zeph. 2:10) himself above them all.

 38. Instead of them (Dan. 11:7-20-21-38), he will honor (1 Sam. 2:30) a god of fortresses (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39); a god unknown (Dan. 2:3, 8:19, 9:25, 10:20, 11:32-38) to his fathers he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones (2 Chr. 32:27) and costly gifts (Dan. 9:23, 10:3-11-19, 11:8-37-38-43; 1 Sam. 9:20; Hag. 2:7).

  39. He will attack the mightiest (Dan. 11:1-7-10-19-31-38-39) fortresses (Num. 13:19; Dan. 11:15-24-39) with the help of a foreign god (Jos. 24:20; 1 Sam. 7:3; Jer. 5:19) and will greatly (Dan. 11:38, 12:4) honor (Prov. 25:27) those who acknowledge (Prov. 24:23) him. He will make them rulers (Dan. 11:3-4-5-39-43) over many people and will distribute (Amos 7:17) the land at a price (1 Kg. 21:2).

 40. "At the time of the end (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9) the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the South (Dan. 8:4-9, 11:5-6-9-11-14-15-25-29-40) will engage (Ps. 44:5; Dan. 8:4, 11:40) him in battle, and the king (Dan. 8:1-20-21-23-27, 9:6-8, 10:1-13, 11:2-3-5-6-7-8-9-11-13-14-15-25-27-36-40) of the North (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) will storm (Job 27:21) out against him with chariots (Ex. 14:9; Dt. 20:1; 2 Kg. 7:6) and cavalry (Ex. 14:18; 2 Kg. 2:12) and a great fleet of ships (1 Kg. 9:27; Ps. 48:7; Jon. 1:3). He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood (Ps. 124:4; S. S. 8:7; Dan. 11:10-22-26-40).

 41. He will also invade the Beautiful Land (Dan. 8:9, 11:16-41-45). Many countries will fall (Ps. 9:3; Is. 40:30; Dan. 11:14-19-33-34-35-41), but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered (Gen. 19:17; Ps. 33:17; Dan. 11:41, 12:1) from his hand.

 42. He will extend his power (Ex. 6:1; 1 Sam. 17:49) over many countries; Egypt will not escape (Ezra 9:8).

 43. He will gain control (Dan. 11:3-4-5-39-43) of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches (Dan. 11:8-38-43) of Egypt, with the Libyans and Nubians in submission (Ps. 37:23; Prov. 20:24).

 44. But reports (1 Sam. 4:19; 2 Kg. 19:7; Prov. 15:30, 25:25; Is. 53:1; Ob. 1) from the east (Dan. 8:9, 11:44) and the north (Dan. 8:4, 11:6-7-8-11-13-15-40-44) will alarm (Gen. 45:3; Ezra 4:4) him, and he will set out in a great rage (Dan. 8:6, 9:16, 11:44) to destroy (Est. 3:6) and annihilate (Jos. 2:10) many.

 45. He will pitch his royal tents (Dan. 4:29, 5:5) between the seas (Dan. 8:4, 11:45) at the beautiful (Dan. 8:9, 11:16-41-45) holy (Dan. 8:13-14, 9:16-20-24-26, 11:28-30-45, 12:7) mountain (Ps. 3:4, 15:1, 24:3, 99:9; Is. 56:7; Dan. 9:16-20, 11:45). Yet he will come to his end (Dan. 8:17, 11:6-13-35-40, 12:4-9), and no one will help (1 Sam. 7:12; Is. 41:10; Dan. 10:13, 11:34, 11:45) him.
