Today was my last snipe hunt of the season. It ends on the 15th but I'm leaving for Mexico on Wed. so I won't have another chance.
It ended on a good note except for losing a bird. Leela (foo-foo dog) didn't run out in front much today so she didn't bust birds out of range. I shot 2 birds which she found so I got careless on marking birds. I flushed 4 snipe in a 4 second time span and shot 3. If that counts as a triple, then I got my 1st one on snipe. However, I lost one of the birds and Leela took off chasing a water rat so she didn't help. We got another one later so we wound up with 5. I had a lot more shots today (and misses) because I got into the thicker maidencane and the snipe weren't as wild. One major drawback, however, was that wild hogs had rooted deep holes in that stuff and I kept tripping when birds would flush.
The only other seasons are squirrel and quail that close on March 6th. I haven't seen or heard a quail in about 3 years so that's out. | Uploaded file |
