There are four titles of Nevil Shute books that are
commonly found in BOMC (Book-Of-The-Month Club) editions. In the order of the most common to the least, as I have experienced, they are: (1) The Chequer Board (2) Pastoral (3) Round The Bend (4) Trustee From The Toolroom. |
|
As for which title had more printings available by BOMC, I can't really
say for sure as I haven't researched it. I have listed these titles in the order in which seems to be the most available according to my personal experience collecting Nevil Shute books. BOMC has come the closest to reproducing a book similar in appearance to the true Morrow first edition than anyone else thus far. For this reason, I will dedicate this page to the comparison of the first American printing by Morrow, and the BOMC Edition. At this time, as I am aware, any other printings of Round The Bend should be relatively easy to identify, in comparison. |
|
With the exception of a few minor details on the dustjacket and one
on the outside cover of the book, the BOMC edition of Round The Bend is practically identical to the first edition. You will discover that, due to this great similarity in the books, many BOMC editions are incorrectly sold as first editions. I believe this is unintentional for the most part, but just a matter of not properly identifying the book. |
|
The first step in identifying the Morrow first edition is by means of
the artwork on the dustjacket. Make sure that it is the same as the image above. Although the artwork on the dustjacket of the BOMC edition is identical to the first edition, this is a good beginning step to determine that you do not have another book club's edition, and narrows it down to a first edition, or BOMC edition. Now we must look closer. Another distinguishing characteristic of the first edition of this title, as with so many of the Morrow editions, is that the dustjacket, if still intact, has a price printed on the upper right hand corner of the inside front flap. On a first edition of Round the Bend, the price should be listed as $3.50. The BOMC edition has no price printed on the dustjacket. It is my suggestion, that when buying a first edition of this title for collectable purposes, make sure that the price is on the dustjacket. In other words, don't buy one that has had the dustjacket's price clipped, as is so common with books given as gifts (or unscrupulous dealers trying to pass the BOMC editions as first). Having the price on the jacket greatly increases the value of the book, and helps make it easier to identify as a first edition. On the first edition's dustjacket, the only time that BOMC is mentioned is a sentence on the bottom of the inside front flap, in which the font is in all caps, centered, and it reads... "A BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB SELECTION". There is no other mention of the book club. The BOMC edition, however, mentions itself twice on the inside front flap of the dustjacket. Once at the top... "BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB* SELECTION", and also at the bottom.... "*Trade Mark of Book-Of-The-Month Club, Inc." It also shows up on the inside back flap, at the top, one time... "Book-Of-The-Month". |
|
To distinguished the book itself, first, compare the cover to the image of
the one above. The design should be the same. Next, notice the black strip of material which runs the length of the book's spine, overlapping to the front and back covers. With the dustjacket removed from the book, and the book positioned face down on the front cover, look at the back of the book cover's extreme lower righthand edge . If you notice a small indention on the black binding cover strip, in that position described, you are looking at a BOMC edition. |
|
If the book does not have the indention and there is not a printing listed
after the title page, and the book matches the other criteria mentioned, you most likely have the first edition. |
