Mauritz Stiller was set to direct
Garbo's second American film but was soon replaced by Fred Niblo. Stiller,
who was not accustomed to Hollywood movie making and was weak with the
English language, was very upset over the dismissal as was Garbo. She was
a professional, however, and remained for the long shoot (four months,
which was a long time in those days).
She was cast as yet another vamp
in a Marlene Dietrich type role where all of the men fall at her feet.
She follows her true love, Antonio Moreno, to Argentina, breaking hearts
along the way.
