Distraught over
losing the role of Sadie Thompson in Rain to Olga Lindo, Tallulah
accepted the last-minute request by Noel Coward to appear in Fallen
Angels when leading lady Margaret Bannerman had to bow-out due to
"nervous exhaustion". The play, about two women who share drinks over
their recollections of a former lover, was considered shocking and obscene
by many. The negative press it received by those who wanted to close
the show, however, only served to make it more popular with the public.
Tallulah's Comments:
"...I had a line: "Oh, dear, rain!" I couldn't resist
the temptation to alter that line on opening night. On reaching it I
mustered up my Sadiest Thompson voice and said: "My God, RAIN!"
The audience roared!"
