Despite terrible
reviews, The Creaking Chair turned out to be a hit and ran for
six months. This resulted in irking Tallulah, who had other fish to
fry and was itching to snag the role of Sadie Thompson in Somerset Maugaum's
Rain (she didn't get the part, see Biography
for details).
Tallulah's Comments:
"Although it ran for thirty weeks, The Creaking Chair was
nothing to disturb G.B.S. or Barrie. On the opening night, the author
was booed. The reviews, while satluting Aubrey Smith, Nigel Bruce and
your far from humble servant, said the melodrama was reminiscent of
something that had been fished from under the East India docks in Limehouse."
