Role: Conchita
Conchita
was Tallulah's first official starring role with her name above the
title on the marquee. This was so exciting to her that she repeatedly
circled the block to look at it and dragged all of her friends with
her. Alas, the play was terrible with Tallulah playing a Spanish dancer
in a black wig involved with a murderous American sailor. One act involved
a monkey who decided to steal the scene on opening night when he removed
Tallulah's wig and waved it at the audience. Tallulah, not to be out
done, did a cartwheel.
Tallulah's Comments:
"If (Londoners) don't like you, or the play, they can let loose
boos to freeze your marrow. I was to have proof of this in my second
London play, Conchita. The boos would have rocked the walls of
Jericho. The author, rather than its heroine, was the target. Conchita
was one of the all-time stinkers!"
