Actually
Tallulah only appeared in six performances of 39 East. She was
hired as a weekend replacement for Constance Binney (who wanted the
time off), but shortly after beginning, an actors strike halted the
production.
Talllulah's
comments: "Unconsciously I was imitating Constance Binney down
to her slightest gesture, the tricks of her voice, her walk. I was parroting
her, in no sense giving a performance of my own. I had completely obliterated
Tallulah Bankhead, a feat contrary to my intent."
