Based on the novel by Somerset Maugham, the story concerns Katrin, a woman torn between her doctor husband and a diplomat. The film is set in China during a cholera epidemic where Dr. Fane (Marshall) is practicing. The Painted Veil received poor reviews. Again, the highlight of the film was more of Adrian's costumes.
