Written
and directed by Sam Shepard, Far North was a critical and commercial
failure and probably the worst reviewed of all of Jessica Lange's films.
The plot concerns a young woman (Kate) who returns home from the city
to find her father critically wounded by his horse. His ailing request
to Kate is to shoot the horse that has given him so much grief. The
remainder of the film focuses on Kate's decision as to whether or not
she should carry out her father's request. Shepard's low-key and offbeat
humor was lost on most audiences but the film does have a wry charm
and some funny moments. Most of the cast members were actors that Jessica
had worked with on earlier films.
Critical
Sampling:
"Although
this is a movie and not a play, the action is very set-bound, and since
Shepard doesn't seem to know what to do with his characters once he's
got them talking, some of them spend an inordinate amount of time balanced
on the kitchen counter reaching for a shotgun at the back of the shelf."
