Jennifer Becomes Mrs. David Selznick in Yacht off Italy(Associated Press, July 13, 1949)
Hollywood's Cinderella star, Jennifer Jones, married her producer-boss, David Selznick, today on a yacht off the Italian Riviera.
The mayor of Portofino announced that the marriage of the 30-year-old actress and the 47-year-old executive had been performed by Ernest J. Stroud, British captain of the yacht Manona.
Jennifer, born Phylis Isley, was just an unknown from Tulsa, Okla., broke but ambitious, when she heard Selznick was looking for a girl to play in "Claudia" Later "The Song of Bernadette" won her an Academy Award.
The marriage took place at 8:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m., NYT).
The Bride Wore Sunglasses
Miss Jones, in sunglasses and with a white, flower-pattern handkerchief on her head, wore a white summer frock. Later the couple boarded another yacht, the Faccy, owned by Prince Pignatelli of Naples, and left for Rapallo, near Genoa where Rudy Crespi, an Italian millionaire, will give them a reception tonight.
Witnesses for the shipboard marriage were French actor Louis Jourdan and Mrs. Jourdan, Producer Leland Hayward and his wife Nancy Hawks Hayward.
The 33-ton Manona was hired by Selznick on the French Riviera.
Hollywood gossip had long linked the producer and his top star. In March, Selznick announced they would wed before the end of the summer "When we get a breather from our work."
The actress went to Ireland in March and later joined Selznick in Zurich where the producer said he and Miss Jones were working very hard on film problems.
Miss Jones divorced actor Robert Walker in 1945. They have two children.
Selznick's first wife was Irene Mayer Selznick, Broadway producer and daughter of movie magnate Louis B. Mayer.
