| Conquest
Released November 4, 1937
Conquest cost MGM 3 million to make and was one of the most expensive productions up to that time. The studio was disappointed when it did not recoup its expenses. It is a lavish production with Boyer as Napoleon and Garbo as his mistress, Countess Marie Walewska. Boyer clearly has the showy role and it is odd seeing Garbo play second fiddle. The film labors on at a tedious pace and for once, even Garbo can't ease the tedium. |
