Mt. Doom Paintball & 24 HourGames held their first 24 hour scenario game on May 3rd and 4th with a most excellent recreation of the RED DAWN story. Using Mt. Doom's natural terrain that provided a fairly tall mountain for the Americans to hold and lowlands below for the Russians to invade the battle lines became clearly defined. Saturday morning started out with thunderstorms but by game time the skies were clear and the sun returned. Missions flowed and players discovered places in the woods that have never seen a paintball until this event. Below you see just a portion of the crowd that gathered to hear their general give his morning speech before taking to the field for "GAME ON" signal. At precisely NOON the horn blew and the game was on.
Russian General "Mr. Black" - did a most excellent job with a full scale Russian invasion of Mt. Doom.
American General "Billy Irving" - gave a simple but straight forward speech to his troops… "FIGHT or DIE!" Many did both but kept pulling out mission points and bringing in the props. The most difficult part of being an American player was the trip up and down the tall mountain from Red Camp. After the climb many players would collapse on the grass behind Red Base and gasp for air till they could rest enough to re-enter the battle. Pacing one's self became an important strategy in each players game. A true appreciation of what US armed forces go through was held by all players before this day's battle was done.
The final score was: Wolverines 1400, Russians 604. The wolverines were able to use their height advantage to defend their base and launch surprise attacks on the Russians. Although the Russians fought bravely, they were not able to stop the Wolverines from getting over Freedom Ridge and on to safety.
