Sheriff Larry Amerson attended Wellborn High School where he graduated in 1971.  He graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1975 with a B. S. Degree in Law Enforcement.  He started his work career at age fifteen with Jack’s Hamburgers in Anniston.  He worked there through high school and his first two years of college.  He was promoted to Assistant Store Manager.  He also worked at Martin’s Clothing Stores and  the Coosa Valley Regional Detention Center.  He credits his early work career with helping him establish the work ethic needed to achieve his career goals.  

Just prior to graduation he was hired by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.  Over his 14-year career with the Sheriff’s Office he worked in the jail, as a patrol Deputy and Investigator.  

In 1988 he was hired to be the Administrator of Calhoun County’s enhanced 9-1-1 system.  While with 9-1-1, Sheriff Amerson oversaw the assigning of street addresses throughout the county and implementing th county’s enhanced 9-1-1 system.  He was the second President of the Alabama Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association.  He was a candidate for Sheriff of Calhoun County in 1994.  He was elected from a field of five candidates and took office in January of 1995.  

He is currently serving in his third term of office.  Sheriff Amerson serves as the Chairman of the Training, Standards, Ethics and Education Committee of the National Sheriff’s Association and Vice Chairman of the Court Security Committee.  He is a Past President of the Alabama Sheriff’s Association.  He is a member of the National Law Enforcement Correctional Technology Center-Southeast Advisory Committee and the Criminal Justice Information System’s Southern Working Group for the National Crime Information Centers and a is a member of the National Steering Committee for Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Initiative.  He serves on a number of Boards and Commissions in Calhoun County and Alabama.
