Wheeler Dam : the Smallmouth Bass Capital of the World
Early 1936 picture of Wheeler Dam Under Construction. A view of the downstream face of Wheeler Dam, Tennessee Valley Authority water control project on the Tennessee River, 15 and a half miles above Wilson Dam in northern Alabama. It has 11 outdoor type generating units and two navigation locks. Outlines of the navigation locks are visible across the river. This project, completed late in 1936, helped keep water out of the swollen Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the great flood of January 1937. It is 72 feet high and 6,052 feet long, the largest dam in the TVA system, with a reservoir area of about 64,300 acres reaching 74 miles upstream to Guntersville Dam. More smallmouth bass weighing 5 lb. or more are caught below Wheeler and Wilson Dam in North Alabama than anywhere else in the world ! The State's record smallmouth bass came from below Wheeler Dam. It weighted 10 lb.- 8 oz. Smallmouth bass are not the only fish caught below Wheeler . Wheeler Dam is famous for the large variety of fish species found in its waters. They include Largemouth Bass, White bass, Sauger, Walleye, Hybrid, Saltwater Striped Bass, Crappie, large Catfish, Drum, and Bream. BACK
