Let me just say that after the Army, I went on to be a police officer with the LAPD and I owe my life ( many times over ) to the fact that I am a paratrooper. Naturally any assistance will be duly acknowledge in my work. If you are able to help please contact me on my e-mail:c-shilleto@ucrysj.ac.uk or write enclosing any information to:....Mr CARL SHILLETO, MILITARY HISTORIAN, C/O 46 ALBION AVENUE, ACOMB, YORK...YO26 5QY...ENGLAND..... Record 1436 Name: Mike Frazier From: Forest, VA Time: 1999-09-18 21:08:00 Comments: Not lucky enough to be one of you guys...but wanted you to know that I shared a little of your past. In the '60s, I was a teenager and in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). All the Air National Guard C-130s were assigned to Vietnam so the stateside guard bases had C-119s and C-124s. We got to ride on them for CAP functions. On C-119s, we had to wear parachutes because they told us that the C-119s did not fly well on on engine. I wondered how hard it would be to pull the ripcord if we had to jump (we had no practice of course). One of the guys must have felt the same way and he pulled it out "a little." It was funny to see that chute laying out in the cargo bay! The loadmaster put it back in his lap and said that if we have to jump he should "throw hard!" I know that this is not a combat story but just a little from the "home front" side! |

Record 1376 Name: James Black From: Colorado Time: 1999-08-26 21:26:00 Comments: Everyone assumes that the 17th Airborne's claim to fame was Operation Varsity, the drop over the Rhine in March of 45. But please don't forget that they fought their way up the Neufchateau-Bastogne Highway from Dec 25 until Jan. 4. On the 4th of January Patton threw the lightly armed Infantry against seasoned troops of the 3rd Panzer grenadiers, the Führer Begleit Brigade, and the 12th SS-Panzerdivision "Hitlerjugend." They lost about 200 men. Then Patton told them to attack again on Jan. 7. Here's the H.Q. daily report: "7 Jan. 45. Objective of the 1st Bn. was the town of Flamizoule, objective of the 2nd Bn. was woods east of Flamizoule. Artillery preparations from 0800-0815. ... The attack jumped off as scheduled with the attacking echelons of the 1st Bn. being immediately subjected to intense mortar and artillery fire. The platoon leader of the attached Tank Platoon advised against the use of his tanks going with the Infantry, and as a result the tanks remained behind the crest of the hill in the north sector Monty, thereby giving little or no assistance to the Bn. The two attacking companies "A" on the right, "B" on the left, were pinned down by well aimed mortar, artillery and SA fire before reaching their 1st phase line." The night of January 6-7 before the attack, the temperature was 18 degrees. At 08:00 a snow squall moved across the shallow valley ten miles west of Bastogne. The 17th fixed bayonets and attacked the towns of Flamizoule and Flammerge where Pkw IVs, Vs, and StuG IIIs caught them in the open in defalade. Nothing less than the blood lust of men maddened by battle drove these Glidertroopers into the two towns. In Flammierge the crazied troopers chased the Germans out of the town and bayoneted not only those who were running away, but Germans trying to surrender also. It was an ugly scene. But a German medic with a white flag who was left behind with nearly 50 wounded, was allowed to surrender his wounded. The Glidermen ate potato soup hot from the German mess truck that was hastily abandoned. The 17th continued on to Houffalese a few days later and helped chase the Germans back across the border. They went defensive along the Our River until Jan. 31 when they stood down back at Mormalon for TO&E refit and traini ng for Operation Varsity in March. Now you know the rest of the story! |

In the Engrs we worked hard fough hard and partied hard. I was a youngster back then, however; the esprit-de-corp and the comradaty the older guys taugh me carried me over the years and sustained me during my tour in Vietnam with the 173d ABN Bde 69/70 English/Uplift. There is no greater feeling then being airborne, forty years from now troopers of today shall feel the same way. Its a great feeling to be forever linked to the greatest fraternal order in the world, Paratrooper of the US Army. I shall be forever proud that I wore the uniform of a paratrooper. Anyone out there remember the mess sargeant from the 307th "E" in the late 50s early 60 SFC Ed Jackson aka Fat Jack, he hated that name. If so give me an airborne. God Bless and keep you all out of harms way. Airborne |

The streets and neighborhoods are lined with the Star Spangled Banner, red white and blue ribbons everywhere. My little Union Jack, (which I will put up next year) first saw service identifying my position to British aircraft draped over a rock formation on the northern side of Mt. Longdon (Falkland Islands) in 1982. My little flag Is now being called back into service, and will take pride of place in my front yard. This time, helping me win a status battle. |

He just returned from a tiger cruise with my marine brother aboard USS Boxer and was at my house this evening for my son's birthday party. As he was telling of his adventure, my mother-in-law asked if he had been in the service, at which point I decided to see if there was a web site for the 187th ARCT, which I was delighted to find. I pulled it up and he was thrilled to find so many pictures and so much information about his unit. I sent the link to his computer so you should hear from him, I hope. I believe his first assignment with 187th was Koje Island. Anyway, thanks for the great sight, from Sam's straight-leg commo/engineer/reservist son, Keith |

Curious as to why you do not have a a 101st jump school certifice like the one I have hanging on the wall of my office. I went through jump school as Campbell in Jan 1961, which was the next to the last class held at Campbell. I jumped out of all the aircraft you mentioned except the C-82, but then I've jumped out of helicopters and a balloon. The Belgium Army used a balloon at 600 feet for their jumpschool. Nice jump, no engine roars, just peace and quiet where you can really appreciate the sound of a Tap-647 (French parachute) opening. I am a "parachutist" with a bronze star dead center on the risers of my badge. Operation Junction City, 22 Feb 1967, South Viet Nam, 173d Abn Bde (Sep) Let me know if you want a color copy of my jumpschool certificate to add to your excellent list.
