06/15/2005: "About Helping Lukas"
I have been thinking about the 13-year old boy with his medical problem. He has something visible which makes it even more difficult for his own self-image. Most of us have forgotten the time when we were that age, with all our exuberance and sense of adventure and in many ways a care-free life.
It is interesting to note a statement made by Karl Marx in his theory of justice/his Social Political view. Said he, "From each according to his ability; to each according to his needs. Even as Christians, we find nothing fundamentally objectionable about that dictum. But I would rather cite Saint Luke, the beloved Greek Physician, who wrote: "Those to whom much has been given and much has been entrusted, much is expected."
Some of us, albeit perhaps a few, have indeed been given much, materially, fincancially and and yes, even intellectually. How much can those in need expect of us, expect from us? John Donne: "No man is an island entire unto himself. Every man is part of the continent." He added, "Any man's death dimishes me."
