As I said, it was a long time ago and I doubted that they were alligator gar in any case. The alligator gar has a distinctly different snout, wider and well, more alligator-like than the species most frequently seen on the Tennessee river.
But there were some pretty big ones none the less! (grin) Judging by the Alabama state records for freshwater fish, they must have been longnose gar. Also, judging by the record for longnose gar set back in 1985, I am absolutely sure that I caught at least one that would have beaten that record back then.
