The best book I know of on fish found in Alabama is "Freshwater Fishes of Alabama" by William Smith-Vaniz. He states the Tennessee River has spotted gar, longnose gar and shortnose gar, but no alligator gar. For Alabama distribution of alligator gar he states: "Found in coastal rivers of the state from the Choctawhatchee drainage westward, In the Mobile Bay drainage, it has been collected in the Alabama and Mobile-Tensaw River systems." I believe they are limited to the coastal plain area of the state. I caught them on a trip to the Dog River at Mobile. We also caught sharks at the same place. They are one of the strongest fighting fish I've ever caught. Biggest one we caught was 90+.
