The mayfly lives most of there lives as a nymph in the water under rocks or burrowed in the mud.The( Hatch) is actually the nymph swimming to the surface and changing into a flying adult.Fish will feed on the nymph as it comes to the suface and again after the mayfly mates and lands back on the water to lay there eggs and then die.Fly fishers love to fish the hatch because with so much food the fish will hit almost any fly that comes close to looking like a mayfly or the nymph
