Joe, on most lakes on the Tennessee river in North Alabama there are many areas upstream of dams that are much wider than the area just behind the dam(s). So this wouldn't explain the lower levels just above dams. However, the massive releases from the spillgates and generator gates does explain it.
If you remember anything of your physics classes, please teach me as I never had a physics course. I am sure it shows too! (grin)
