I wasn't trying to develop the entire theory of fluid dynamics, only to explain why the river level would be at or near "normal" levels just above the dams during these flood conditions and while the spillways are fully open, while at the same time areas upstream of any given dam could be much higher than flood level. Some folks seemed to be incredulous about the lake levels posted at lakeinfo.tva.gov in comparison to the water levels upstream from a particular dam.
