I have a 16 ft flat bottom with a 40 horse tiller handle. I used a 25 hp for 10 years on the same boat and it did fine. I would have to disagree with this being rough on equipment. I have used the same boat for 12 years and it is just as good as it was the day I bought it. I would also disagree on buying used equipment unless it was in very good condition. Your first concern is safety, therefore you want something that is reliable. Something that will crank when you want it to crank and a good boat that is solid and reliable. I have a 16 ft welded polar craft and would highly recommend them. Of course their are plenty of good flat bottom mfg's out there.Unless you are going to be banging around the dam all the time with your boat it should last for years doing this kind of fishing.
