A good inexpensive mono line is Excel Premium from Bass Pro shops. I have used 4 and 6 pound test and it has worked quite well for me. I know use 6 pound test most of the time. The line is a little stretchy, but for me not too stretchy. It has a low memory and is cheap enough to re-spool with as often as needed. A 9000 spool of 6 pound test will run about $25.
I haven't tried higher pound test weights, so I can't say anything about that. Also, I use spincast reels almost exclusively, but Alex uses the same line on open face spinning reels with great success.
I have heard good things about gold P line for spinning reels, but have never tried it myself.
Good luck and good fishin'
