I own several units and it depends on where you fish, and how you plan to use the gps. I haVE A gARMIN HANDHELD UNIT WITH NO MAP AND IT IS GOOD FOR GOING straight line to a place you have marked on your gps. It isn't accurate enough to find a small brushpile to crappie fish. The newer units are supposed to be more accurate. I also have a Garmin with the maps. It is more expensive, but would help more if you are on strange water because you can see your boat moving on the lake. The maps also show roadways and the unit can be used in your car for navigation. I use mine mostly on Saltwater and they are very useful. I really haven,t decided to use mine on freshwater because I always fish my home lake and I know where i am. Contact me if you need additional info.
