I have more experience below Wilson than Wheeler, but from what I've read and heard either would be good for smallies and stripers. I have fished mostly for smallies. I don't really think you would need a guide for either one if you talk to the locals at the ramp, get a map, be cautious, and use common sense. It gets shallow up close to the dam below Wilson, but you don't have to go that far to catch fish. We usually start our drift a few hundred yards above the new bridge ( the last before the dam. Be careful going under this bridge. The pilings come almost up to the surface and boats have gotten stuck on it.) If you launch at McFarland Park, you can get bait at the end of the old barge canal, which ends right near McFarland. Just ask somebody. For smallies, use a #2 hook and just a small splitshot up above it. Fishing should be good from March thru Mid-May. Hope this helps. I'm no expert, but just thought I'd tell you what I know.
