This is a pretty neat site that will help you identify just about any species of fish east of the Mississippi.
They are pretty easy to keep alive in cold weather, but if you crowd them in a container they will die like flies. A 50 quart cooler with plenty of air bubbles will support about 50-60 minnows. If you put too many in there they will all die. They range from 3-6 inches long. With a good supply of oxygen they will live for several weeks in a cooler when the water temperature is below 65 degrees. They are still fiesty when the water is in the upper 30's but when the water reaches freezing they turn belly up. 55 degrees is about optimum temperature for them.
