Wheeler lake is and has historically been used as one of the main "flood control" lakes in North Alabama. Even though the last reading (as I write this) from the Wheeler page at http://lakeinfo.tva.gov was 551.29, the minimum winter level is 550.0.
One note about Wheeler, I have come to believe that each TVA dam provides the data you see on the lakeinfo pages, mainly because of the timeliness and accuracy of the data. Wheeler's predictions and timeliness have historically been extremely poor, at best! I have the feeling that the folks at Wheeler dam are not very involved or attentive to the fact that their reports and prediction affect so many people. OK, I'll just go ahead and say it, they have their anterior protrusion projected up their posterior opening, making it hard to see reality. (sigh)
There is no substitute for time on the water. If you don't go and throw, how do you know?
Good luck and good fishin'
